An old friend passed away recently. We weren't super close as the years went by but we bonded over our love of Green Day in junior high school. She was the only person I knew who loved them as much as I did, and we'd always have a chat whenever anything was going on with the band. She was a friend to me when not many were, and I'll always remember her big smile and her even bigger heart. RIP Kelsey, I'll be thinking of you every time I listen to our favourite band.
I'm sure I've done this in here before but American Idiot Warning Nimrod 21st Century Breakdown (controversial I know) Dookie Saviors Kerplunk Revolution Radio Insomniac Trilogy 39/Smooth FOAM
It's in the middle of the pack for me. Most if it is pretty good to great... But then there's the tracks that sound like they were written for movie trailers or commercials for network TV fantasy shows. Those songs are fine for what they are but slow the pace of the album in an unfun way that makes a full album listen a bit of a slog. I've always had a hard time articulating this but I think you could have taken those same songs, maybe cut 1-2 of them, and split them up across two 5-6 track EPs (one focused on Billie's sobriety/internal struggles at the time and another focused on politics/struggles of the outside world) and I think the reception would have been much better. The bangers would have popped more and the songs that slow things down would work better too. (Also acknowledging that this would have never actually happened given the Trilogy but y'know... I'm convinced we'd be talking about this batch of songs differently if that were the case.)
Huh! I watched Drunk History regularly when it was still on air, but I have no recollection of this episode…
