Drums were mic’d up, and sounded live to me. Why bother with all the mics if it was all prerecorded? I dunno, would be cool if it was actually all live.

Probably so it doesn’t look prerecorded.

Realistically, they were never going to get away with saying what they do at concerts with the NFL. Once I heard they were performing during the segment “honoring of NFL legends” I figured as much. Personally though, I thought opening the biggest “Yay America” sporting event of the year with “American Idiot” while Tom Brady had to stand beside them was pretty great .

I'm not sure what people were expecting, TBH. Even if they went off-script and said something it would have been censored. It would have given us all a quick hit of dopamine for listening to a band who does "the right thing" but they probably would have been punished for it, no minds would have been changed, and the articles would be almost exactly like the ones going around about what Billie said the night before...

To me, the slew of bands from their same era who have remained silent on Israel, don't regularly support LGBTQ+ causes, and/or haven't said shit about this current administration are way worse than Green Day picking two overtly political songs and letting those do the talking for the day.

Talking less about the people in this thread here and more about people on the Internet in general who are very upset with them. I just really do not understand it looking at it all from a practical, "real world" perspective.

I’m not mad at them really, American Idiot is still a statement, BUT I don’t understand what people mean when they say they had no other choice etc. They’re plenty rich. What’s gonna happen?

Could they be an option for the actual Super Bowl half-time show at some point? If so, then that could be a compelling reason enough to not piss off the NFL. Otherwise, your point stands.

  10. If there's a clause in the contract ... get sued.

Those song choices were extremely pointed, just like Bad Bunny doing a whole segment staged around power poles was pointed. I think you can make a statement without actually coming right out and saying things against Trump and this administration, which both of these artists (and also Brandi Carlile) have done repeatedly.

Yeah sure, but so what? That’s what I’m trying say lol

  14. The NFL generated what ... 20 billion+ last year? You want to face that legal team?

They could bankrupt you for breach of contract probably just in legal fees defending yourself.

I don't know what the contract said. Maybe it said nothing? The Super Bowl historically doesn't pay performers, so I don't think it had anything to do with them getting paid. But I can very much picture a scenario where no matter how rich "Green Day Inc" is ... they face catastrophic consequences for a breach of contract.

Argument could then be: don't sign that contract, but I do think I'd make the argument that playing "American Idiot" and "Holiday" at the SB is a political statement in itself.
