Drums were mic’d up, and sounded live to me. Why bother with all the mics if it was all prerecorded? I dunno, would be cool if it was actually all live.
Realistically, they were never going to get away with saying what they do at concerts with the NFL. Once I heard they were performing during the segment “honoring of NFL legends” I figured as much. Personally though, I thought opening the biggest “Yay America” sporting event of the year with “American Idiot” while Tom Brady had to stand beside them was pretty great .
I'm not sure what people were expecting, TBH. Even if they went off-script and said something it would have been censored. It would have given us all a quick hit of dopamine for listening to a band who does "the right thing" but they probably would have been punished for it, no minds would have been changed, and the articles would be almost exactly like the ones going around about what Billie said the night before... To me, the slew of bands from their same era who have remained silent on Israel, don't regularly support LGBTQ+ causes, and/or haven't said shit about this current administration are way worse than Green Day picking two overtly political songs and letting those do the talking for the day. Talking less about the people in this thread here and more about people on the Internet in general who are very upset with them. I just really do not understand it looking at it all from a practical, "real world" perspective.
I’m not mad at them really, American Idiot is still a statement, BUT I don’t understand what people mean when they say they had no other choice etc. They’re plenty rich. What’s gonna happen?
Could they be an option for the actual Super Bowl half-time show at some point? If so, then that could be a compelling reason enough to not piss off the NFL. Otherwise, your point stands.
Those song choices were extremely pointed, just like Bad Bunny doing a whole segment staged around power poles was pointed. I think you can make a statement without actually coming right out and saying things against Trump and this administration, which both of these artists (and also Brandi Carlile) have done repeatedly.
The NFL generated what ... 20 billion+ last year? You want to face that legal team? They could bankrupt you for breach of contract probably just in legal fees defending yourself. I don't know what the contract said. Maybe it said nothing? The Super Bowl historically doesn't pay performers, so I don't think it had anything to do with them getting paid. But I can very much picture a scenario where no matter how rich "Green Day Inc" is ... they face catastrophic consequences for a breach of contract. Argument could then be: don't sign that contract, but I do think I'd make the argument that playing "American Idiot" and "Holiday" at the SB is a political statement in itself.
Didn’t know that! Imagine being 5SOS and knowing that song could’ve been yours. It must be devastating.
Five tiers: American Idiot Dookie Insomniac Kerplunk Warning Nimrod Saviors 21st Century Breakdown Revolution Radio 39/Smooth Rest
I would move American idiot up, kerplunk down, shenanigans up, slapped up happy down and those two trilogy down
i thought about bumping shenanigans up. i dont really listen to it as a comp often but the songs that arent covers beat ass. i wish a lot of those nimrod and warning era songs were on their respective albums
I'm still a little salty they put Suffocate on the Warning 25 release. Whoever was in charge of these 25th deluxe editions...c'mon.
I’ll add on and say the live Awesome As Fuck version of Going To Pasalacqua is better than the original studio version
