I've only listened to Uno in full before now. Felt like doing a discography run so now's the time. Ended up only making it through Uno and Dos today.
I've tried a trilogy run every year for like a decade it feels like. Maybe this will be the year it clicks.
Some day ... some day ... it'll click. but probably not cause .. stinky I have had it happen with albums before where all of a sudden it's like ... oh shit yeah that's good! One day a year I usually will be like, ok let's see ...
I have also had albums grow on me or finally click, but especially in the context of this band’s career… I don’t know about these ones!
FOAM probably has a better chance because the trilogy just feels so over stuffed and full of just too many stretches of songs I really dislike.
I've come around on the trilogy. I think in the moment, those releases seemed like end times for this band, between how much they underperformed and everything that was going on with Billie Joe, and I hated the idea of that being how they went out. 14 years and multiple albums later, including one (Saviors) that I personally count among their best, I'm more willing to view them charitably as minor, mostly fun albums.
One of my favorite things about the Trilogy is imagining Billie Joe stuck in traffic behind a school bus, seeing the words "stop when the red lights flash", and thinking "that would make a killer song!".
I still like the playlist I made combining tracks from all three albums into one made to sound like a concept record like AI and 21CB. It does have a bunch of songs that people here hate though which just reminds me that people can get really weird about their favorite bands and music in general.
Reddit is still pretty critical of it. To be fair, the tides have shifted quite a bit over the last decade. More people are like "I gave it a chance and it's actually pretty good!" It was just inextricably tied to Billie going to rehab and all the fallout surrounding iHeart Radio which soured the trilogy in the eyes of the public.
I come from the opposite tact. I quite enjoyed them when I was younger (and in high school) and as I’ve gotten older I don’t ever revisit them.
I enjoyed the trilogy when I was younger and I enjoy 99% of the songs still. Does it contain their best lyricism? Definitely not, but the songs are fun. It's all the sort of power pop/punk I really enjoy.
Back my senior year of HS there was a band that covered it in my hometown and it was even worse somehow
I always hope that FOAM clicks with me cause I genuinely like the title track and it is a fun way to start off the album. Then track 2 hits and I immediately want to listen to anything else.
Most of the trilogy is pretty bland and uninspired, but it’s mostly inoffensive at worst. FOAM on the other hand…
