I feel like they actually have cut down on this stuff lately. They squeezed a lot more songs than they normally would have in at Coachella because BJ really only did the extended Hitchin' a Ride and bringing the person up for Know Your Enemy (which even then was quicker than usual), everything else was played pretty much straight through
It's been notably cut down since their post-Rev Rad tours imo, but it's still quite a bit of crowd work lol. I understand it being tiring for some people, but I will never not love it lol
21st Century Breakdown is now 16. I distinctly remember the year this came out and that it was 16 years ago .. woof.
This triggered a memory...I remember reading through pages and pages of an audio production/engineering forum where the engineer(?) on that album answered a lot of questions about the gear they used on the album and how they recorded it. It was fascinating, and gave me a deep appreciation for how good that album sounds. And also what an incredible guitar player Billie Joe is, because apparently instead of copy/pasting his guitar tracks to layer them, he recorded each of them and was so precise there was very little editing needed to layer each take on top of each other.
Wow. That was actually my first Green Day album. Know Your Enemy and 21 Guns were everywhere at that point. My mom got me a copy for my 13th birthday that summer
For some reason the first thing I recalled when thinking about the album release was that the band refused to make a censored version to be sold at Walmart. Someone on AP was upset that there wouldn’t be a censored version they could buy for their child.
Oh yeah, I remember that Wal Mart controversy! My mom was still weird about me listening to explicit music during that time, so I was legitimately shocked when she got it for me for my birthday. I think that was the first explicit album I ever owned
I listened to that album a couple days ago and had the same thought. I seem to remember them streaming it on their site early, the day before my senior prom. I went to Best Buy and bought the CD on my senior skip day. And I graduated a week or two later. Wild it’s been that long.
I remember watching the Know Your Enemy music video premiere on MTV. First Green Day album cycle I was apart of from the start and my first concert in summer 2010 was the 21CB tour!
My first “real” concert was the 21CB tour. Sept 4, 2010, Shoreline Amp in Mountain View. The tour closer! Honestly, still one of the coolest, best shows I’ve ever seen
Yup, I've said it on this site before but the 21CBD tour changed my life when I was 14 and I credit it with getting me into music to the degree that I am today I will always love the album and put it in my top 3-5 by them because of it too
High praise from Billy Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan on the punk band he believes has eclipsed the Ramones
