It's pop/punk...like 90% of the songs sound the same lol

New song is a banger. Could fit on 21CB.

    Go get those royalties P!NK.

I actually really like that riff lol.

Yeah this new song is very "Rock Star"....wonder if they add Pink's team to the writing credits like they did for The Struts for "Still Breathing".

New single also reminds me of Edging in that it sounds written to play under a baseball video game start screen in 2005.

I wonder if this will be a backwards-facing Nimrod of sorts for the 2nd half of their career and mix straight ahead 2nd gen Green Day with some of their 2nd gen ‘eclectic’ songs they’ve experimented with on trilogy and FOAMF. But, hopefully, still feels like a good, cohesive rock record like Nimrod did. I guess we’ll see!

Just hopeful that American Dream is the only song on the album that sounds like American Idiot pt 3

Isn't Rolling Stone's out? Saw a scan of it.

I scanned the scan on Reddit. Read to me like “lads are back, older now, still got it, but not always, but they’re smarter, and they’re still rocking” which I feel like you could write about any older rock band who releases a new record that could be great or not great.

New song is fine. And I buy the Sabbath reference point, though it's undeniably that Pink melody line at the same time. It's interesting the curves people are willing to grade artists on when things like this happen.

I don't really care for it, and I'll probably wind up skipping it on album plays after the first few but... If nothing else, it's kinda fun, and at least pretends to have some substance? I can see this being a track I throw on a summer BBQ playlist next year. Will be bummed if it's part of the setlist for the tour next summer, though.

Still stoked for the record as this feels more like an outlier than anything...

  14. This is every Rolling Stone review ever that isn't a reissue or a Taylor Swift record.

"3.5 stars, you might like it!"

Not my favorite of the 4, but man are these some catchy tracks. Between all of the marketing (Sirius channel, pop ups, performances) I am currently in full Green Day hype mode.

Agree. There are some cool parts to the song but it is disjointed.

This song is the epitome of modern day Green Day on autopilot.

I always wonder when things like this happen do artists really know they are plagarising ? Like I feel like whenever I’m messing around and writing a song a lot of times I’ll be like “ o wait that’s a song already”

but if I see Billie Joe twirling in the air on their next concert then I’ll agree they did this on purpose

I believe Billy Joe has cribbed enough iconic, hyper identifiable riffs and melodies over the years that it’s safe to say it’s a songwriting exercise for him to tweak and Green Day-ify popular songs to see if he comes up with anything interesting. His songwriting friend Rivers Cuomo Has shared that he does that to try and come up with new song parts.

There’s also a writing exercise and a character building exercise where you try to impersonate a celebrity or playwright/author, either in your writing or in your performance, and, unless you are a super gifted impressionist, you’ll end up with something new, that others wouldn’t immediately recognize as an impression. And that can be the start of a new character or piece that you expand on, dropping any of the impression qualities at that point as it’s now an original new thing.
