i think it's one of the few follow-ups where the band decided to make an even bigger record than their previous big record and it works. for me it's like american idiot but the songs are even better and packed with more internal surprises of course some of this reaction is personal. the american idiot singles really wore on me through radio overplay, particularly "september." 21st century breakdown didn't get the same treatment beyond "21 guns" (which i for some reason never tired of!) which allows for songs like "before the lobotomy" and "last night on earth" to still feel full of life and ideas for me
Yeaaaahhhhhhhhhhh I really can not agree with 21 being "an even bigger record" other than the length of it haha. The songs are more traditionally structured, the singles are safer, there's no story aspect...
oh, good point. Wiki says Armstrong has described the album as a "snapshot of the era in which we live as we question and try to make sense of the selfish manipulation going on around us, whether it be the government, religion, media or frankly any form of authority" whatever that means
even the american idiot stage productions story is kinda nonsense and that should be very story driven
I just have no desire to listen to anything post-Idiot if I'm in a Green Day mood. Occasionally I've gotten an urge to listen to 21CB and it immediately underwhelms me. And songs like Stay The Night on Uno, I feel like I have a better impression of it in my head until I listen to it. I mean, I would kill to love another Green Day record. In no way do I WANT to dislike this new stuff. Just none of it compares to Idiot and before to me.
i think that for me, no band strikes gold in the way that this band did TWICE and the fact that they made two records that came out and completely changed the music landscape at that time kind of cursed the rest of their career post AI. I also really feel like AI was the last huge rock record of that kind. Like, every song was a massive single that was unavoidable for the 5+ years after its release. I cant think of a record that big or really even one in conversation with the popularity of that record at its peak.
New game: you rank, but ONLY rank albums AFTER American Idiot 21CB > Revolution Radio > Uno > Father > Tre > Dos
I'm trying to think of a comparison, but outside of My Chemical Romance or even Twenty One Pilots if we're going with a loose definition of rock, I can't think of anyone else right now.
21CBD>Tre>Uno>Revolution Radio>Father of All>Dos I could make a mean album out of the best songs though. Not sure I'd include any tracks from Father of All...
My “Cuatro” Playlist of the trilogy > 21CB > Father > RR Honestly...I just love how fun and easy it is to listen to this album.
