They need to fire their PR person immediately but yeah I've been listening to this constantly the last couple days
After ingesting this album, here is where I now rate their discography (worst to best) 1039 Smoothed Out/Slappy Hours - rough draft for what they would become later Dos - Has some killer tracks but has some REAL low points Tre - Overall more consistent than Dos but without the highs Father Of All Motherfuckers - Fun, snappy and only 1-2 I can't get into. Revolution Radio - Often mistakenly billed as a "return to form" when, really, it's just an overarching view of Green Day is best at Uno - Nice and breezy after two back-to-back rock operas. It also holds the strongest songs out of all the trilogy which is likely why they released it first. Kerplunk - Locking in their sound to prepare for the major years Warning - Both over/under-rated in that it got little to no recognition at first whereas now people tend to go overboard in praising it. Nice precursor to American Idiot 21st Century Breakdown - The Amnesicac to the Kid A of American Idiot but still full of strong songs, just not as big of a surprise coming after AI. Insomniac - Loud, angry, fast. A great album made by a band trying to shed their popularity that still rips. Nimrod - They finally step out of the 3 chord pop-punk and experiment Dookie - 90's classic, every song still holds up. American Idiot - Phenomenal achievement by a band that everyone thought was down for the count. One of the biggest comebacks I've ever seen.
Honestly, if people are going to do album rankings for green day, I might have to put Uno last. It's just so boring, I don't think I could get through it if I had to listen to it again. Insomniac or Warning would probably be at the top
After listening to the first half of the album, every song has a "song on sports video game soundtrack by little known indie/alt-rock band". I personally love it when bands grow with the audiences sonically and lyrically, this just feels so juvenile and it's reflected in the marketing. I'm not going to completely go to town it because I haven't fully listened to it yet, it's not bad but I can already tell it's not exactly grabbing me either. Btw, Green Day and Bojack both featuring a 'horny' unicorn...one is funny in an ironic way, the other is funny in a tragic way.
for Green Day this is just a flat out disappointment. If the words "Green Day" werent slapped on this, I wouldn't even blink an eye or make it past a few seconds for most of these songs. Only songs that get passssssssssable/good grades... Graffitia, Stab you in the heart (my favorite), and i like chorus for Oh Yeah. Those songs range from B- to B+, the rest are just soooo freakin' lame, boring, repetitive. I will say, the 2nd half of the album is much better than the first. The singles/videos are kinda the worst songs (Junkies on high is worst song of the album)
Junkies is becoming my favorite on this lol. Sugar Youth is definitely the best song on here though, but Junkies has a cool sound to it. I can't imagine anybody not getting embarrassed when they listen to Stab You or Teenage Teenager
Gaffitia and Oh Yeah are my favs, especially the former. I’m actually looking forward to hearing these songs on the Hella Mega tour. They’re begging to be played as loud as possible.
This is growing on me a lot. It's not likely to make my top ten at the end of the year, but it's quick and fun and I guess that's about all I can ask for from this band at this point. I also revisited Revolution Radio on a drive yesterday and liked it more than I remembered. Then I skimmed through the trilogy and liked it even less than I remembered.
relistening to the entire trilogy is one of the most depressing things i've ever done for the sake of a review
i think 21st century breakdown is my favorite green day album now and i think i'm gonna die on that hill. warning no. 2
I love 21st Century Breakdown. I was a little surprised to see how critical many are of it in hindsight. I vividly remember anticipating it so much after American Idiot, listening the first time, and feeling underwhelmed. Then I threw it on while I was mowing my parents' massive 9 acre lawn in late spring shortly after it was released and tried to follow the narrative. It clicked. I've loved it ever since.
Oh didn’t realize you were actually there lol, that’s cool. But yeah at least on camera the crowd looked super dead
I like 21 but for me it just feels like a retread of AI but not as creative, there's a fair amount on 21 that I don't really like, can't say the same for AI
Less cohesive. Not as focused on that driving force of a story. It’s there, but not done as well as they did with AI. Probably could have cut a couple songs, to be honest.
Imo the trilogy is so fun to go back and just listen through every now and then. There are a lot of tracks that are some of Green Day's best work that go unnoticed. I know that is not a popular opinion lol 21 CBD is also really awesome, and I never understood hate for it
