Yeah, I’ve given this a few listens through now, and I maintain that this is really, really bad. Back to the new SLS I go.
Yeah it’s completely ridiculous to claim this is Motown influences. It’s three white dudes making a bad Hives ripoff.
Like how often have you heard/read the phrase “We/I’ve been listening to a lot of Motown [...]” when bands/artists talk about their radio ass radio rock/pop lol Okay that’s nice but clearly you didn’t learn anything And I fucking love Green Day
Literally this. Everything about this album feels like this is exactly what happened. It’s like they booked a weekend session with Butch Walker and called it a day. Anybody calling this good hasn’t listened to it more than 10 times. The record is grating, lacks hooks, and the lyrics are flatter than a board. Billie Joe has been autopilot since American Idiot, and it this point the band really doesn’t give a fuck. That being said, I fully expect them to release some decent music once their off their label.
I think Billie was really trying to make something great with 21CB, but yeah, other than that i completely agree
One thing that confuses me taking out the quality of the album, is that this sound that they have gone for hasn't been popular or sounded anything but dated since about 2006. Feels weird that this is what they went for.
They're not really going for the mid-2000's garage rock revival. They're going for actual garage rock from the 60's and 70's and putting it through a Green Day 2020 filter.
Isn't the album cover intentionally bad? There's a unicorn throwing up rainbow vomit FFS, lol. Edit: also, I got the limited explicit vinyl cover, so no unicorn for me, haha.
There's probably a shit ton of albums this site needs to apologize for criticizing if "as long as the band had fun making it" is that important to the actual product lol
It’s never a good sign when a band says they “had a blast” writing the record. Challenges bring out the best emotions.
