It's better than a lot of Father of All, but that is a pitifully low bar. I like that they're not trying to sound like The Black Keys anymore, but holy shit that chorus is horrendously underwritten. Like, did they listen to this song after tracking it? There's no hook whatsoever. It sounds like it could have been written in half an hour. Honestly I would prefer it if they just tried to write American Idiot or 21st Century Breakdown again, and do another ambitious concept album. This isn't working. They seem to be at their best when they are actually writing about something they feel passionate about, or just telling a story.
I will always love this band but I think we all have to accept they are now 15 years past their prime. (And I like 21CBD a lot.) Their music seems so uninsipred and their REAL PUNK RAWK schtick is cringeworthy, especially considering they are all 50-odd and 'the kids' haven't cared about synths or auto tune for, what, a decade at least? Hopefully they can manage a few late-career tracks worthy of adding to the back end of the eventual top 100 Green Day song lists but beyond that it's best to just be happy with what they've already given us. I'd put their Dookie through American Idiot run up there with any five-album run in history.
I I think I actually liked Uno, Tre, and Revolution Radio more than 21CB. That one felt like the death knell to me. I’ll never stop listening when they put new tunes out though.
Bang Bang (imo) is a top Green day track and revolution radio as a whole was fine. FOAMF is the suspect.
I think Still Breathing is the best song they have made since American Idiot. Maybe. Even so that's just an example of what I'm saying. The best case scenario for Green Day is now that a few new songs become worthy of a playlist. I'd love for them to prove me wrong but I don't think they're actually interested in being great anymore. They have done that. They are rich and famous. If they just wanna jam and bash out some songs then I can't blame them. I'm simply adjusting my expectations in accordance.
