I see a lot of people saying this is very Olivia Rodrigo but I want to be fair and also say that Olivia Rodrigo always says she's massively influenced by Gracie Abrams so I think it all goes both ways.
I like this album a lot, but I do feel like the singles were a bit of a head fake and hinted at a poppier album, whereas there are still a lot of ballady Dessner tracks here. I think maybe I’m just tired of Dessner’s whole thing.
I really enjoyed this on first listen, but it was definitely more same-y balladry from track to track then I had originally hoped from the pre-release singles. Good illustration of the difference between Dessner and Antonoff. I really like the “Let It Happen” -> “Gave You I Gave You I” run in the center of the album.
It’s easier to just pretend he doesn’t exist, since he contributes absolutely nothing. That thumbnail is the first time I’ve seen his face in years.
