Right now my favorites are Tranz, Kansas, Fire Flies and Souk Eye with Souk Eye leading the pack. Such a strong album.
Album Review: Gorillaz Dial Up the Desolation on The Now Now This guy doesn't seem to like more introspective and relaxing/ambient tracks therefore they are bad. I hate that kind of mentality. This is an excerpt: “Kansas” and “Fire Flies” feature the same space-funk flourishes that put the group on the map, but there’s nothing playful or caustic enough in either song to cut through Albarn’s Nyquil-addled musings." What a chump.
Have heard this three times now and it's probably my fourth favorite of the six, which is about what I expected. Some really cool shit on here but no real huge standout tracks like most of their other albums have for me. I'm apparently one of the few people that loves Humanz though
Souk Eye is my standout track from it. It's like The Now Now mixed with Demon Days and I'm all for that. Humanz had some really good tracks, but stuff like Sex Murder Party really held it back.
Since I'm a huge nerd, for some reason I decided it would be fun to take songs from both Humanz and The Now Now and reimagine them as one album. Here's the playlist I created. I did my best to make it flow well. Now Humanz - YouTube Edit: The difference in production styles for the albums makes it difficult, but if they were all done in the style of Humanz, I think this playlist would be good rad. Humility doesn't really fit on either album because it's such a bright sounding song compared to everything else.
What are you ranking below this? I think I'd still put Humanz above this. I don't think The Now Now's highs match the highs of Humanz, but it's quality does stay consistent throughout the album.
Fun album, but 50% of the songs would be better without the vocal effect that Damon keeps using, it ruins some of my favorite tracks. There's also a severe lack of diversity. Fun summer album, but faaaar from Humanz. I honestly don't understand why Humanz gets so much dislike.... there are an incredible amount of top tier Gorillaz songs Ascension, Strobelite, Saturn Barz, Submission, Charger, Andromeda, Busted and Blue, Let Me Out..... come on now
Gorillaz > Demon Days The rest I've liked bits and pieces of but nothing even comes close to touching those two, probably two of my all time favorite albums.
I've never liked Demon Days much, so my ranking is no one's ranking Gorillaz > Plastic Beach > Humanz > Demon Days > The Fall can't put Now Now anywhere yet
I'd be much more ready to make a top ten songs list. Hong Kong #1, really like Bill Murray and the Damon sung version of Que Pasa Contigo as well. And like 12D3 is sick, lot of good stuff on those early compilations.
1. Hong Kong 2. El Manana 3. Latin Simone 4. M1A1 5. New Genius (Brother) 6. Every Planet We Reach is Dead 7. 19-2000 8. Double Bass 9. Kids With Guns 10. Clint Eastwood Special mention to like Empire Ants, Ascension, Busted and Blue, Andromeda, Bill Murray, and like the rest of those first two albums, lot of great stuff to consider and I'm already second guessing this especially the order. So many good songs.
My favorite song by them by far. When I first heard Gorillaz from a friend I was like "what the fuck is this stuff? What genre are they?" Because Demon Days had just come out and I binged the CD like crazy. Then I bought the Live at the Manchester Opera House DVD of Demon Days and watching the performance of Hong Kong was incredible. I'm seeing them for the second time this October and I know they won't play Hong Kong (because why would they?) but it would be such a nice surprise. I miss that side of Gorillaz, I feel like the last two CDs weren't as experimental will their genre blending.
Demon Days is such a fucking incredible album. They hit on electro-rock (Last Living Souls, O Green World), funk (Kids with Guns), hip-hop (Dirty Harry, November Has Come), alt-rap (Feel Good Inc), acoustic (El Manana), blues (Every Planet), dance/house (DARE), punk/nu-wave (White Light), Beatles/Beach Boys (Don't Get Lost), reggae (Demon Days) and even spoken word (Fire Coming Out) and they pull all of it off and it blends together amazingly. Literally a perfect album imo
I always picture Demon Days like a play. It was so well crafted. If anyone hasn't seen the live DVD of it, I highly recommend it because you might have a greater appreciation for the album afterwards. Hearing the demo for "Don't Get Lost" and seeing what it evolved into is crazy. It shows so much growth between the first and second album. I really want them to just go crazy for the next release and do a plethora of different sounds. They used to be more quirky and all over the place and I miss that. As much as I love The Now Now and Humanz because they are super solid albums, they don't feel as unique as the three other main albums.
I just remember being a teen and having demon days blow my mind because it mixed rap and rock. I then remember being obsessed with this gorillaz computer game that you could look through their mansion. It was fun and I never beat it.
