Gorillaz - Cracker Island (February 24, 2023) Album • Page 4

    Die rad.

I want the gorillaz to bring back Del and sound like the first album. By far my favorite, followed by Demon Days. Plastic Beach had a handful of good songs as did Humanz, but in general I lost interest in Gorillaz once Plastic Beach came out. I was a huge fan, but that one disappointed me a lot.

I would take Deltron 3030s first album over any of the stuff gorillaz put out after Demon Days. Here I am, roast me.

Plastic Beach is their best imo

These Gorillaz fakes are crazy to me haha. Outside of 5-6 bangers, I honestly think the debut sits underneath Song Machine and maybe even Humanz for me

I think it may be a nostalgic thing for me. I remember buying that cd when it came out my sophomore year of hs and playing it every single day on my discman on the bus to school. That sounds and vibe on the s/t was just never matched. Even Demon Days went in a totally different direction and I would say that one (musically) is top notch.

From what I remember reading, Damon has a bunch of material recorded with De La Soul so I'm sure we will see more stuff later.

There's also a new Del bonus song I'm pretty sure.

No shade, but can’t imagine still wanting the sound from the first album, considering basically nothing from them sounded like that after because it was as much a Dan The Automator album as it was Damon. Same with Demon Dayz being a Danger Mouse album.

This one definitely feels like a Greg Kurstin production. Guy loves his chill, synthy pop tunes.

I think people are so quick to rag on Gorillaz nowadays, but forget so many things like how Damon was not the only major influence back in the day, he had Dan The Automator, Cass Browne, Morgan Nicholls, Danger Mouse. Sure, Damon has always steered the ship, but it's very clear that all this people helped make those projects so special.

And I don't mean that as a put down to all the producers and artists who currently work on Gorillaz.

I definitely don't want that sound anymore, but that was my favorite era of the project. They still put out great albums IMO, but maybe the novelty has worn off a bit with all the widespread collaboration, less focus on aesthetic and narrative vision and more on the actual music. I still believe they have another masterpiece in them waiting to happen.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

I don't need them to recapture the debut sound, that ship sailed years ago anyway. I'm just happy if they put out a Song Machine quality project every few years tbh. maybe next time haha

Gorillaz? For the first album they played behind a screen that played music videos and visuals when they toured.

For Demon Days they had a screen above them and the main band was all shrouded in darkness so you could only see their silhouettes but the guests artists were up visible on stage.

I'm pretty sure it was always known who they were, but from what I remember the goal at the time was to put the focus on the characters of the fictional band and on the music.

Apparently, from what I checked because I was curious as to why they stopped doing that for Plastic Beach and on, Damon hated it.

Conceptually I loved it and it was very special especially on the Demon Days Live at the Manchester Opera House DVD, but if I were a performer, I would get very bored with that.

I saw them on the self titled tour and all humans were hidden, it was all cartoon, pretty awesome honestly

The Demon Days shows got really expensive too and they just couldn't sustain it

So yeah I finally got to this and it's just what I feared, all of the singles are by far the best songs on the album. They're damn good songs though, tracks like the title track, Skinny Ape and Silent Running are up there with their very best. I think they've basically never failed though, I enjoy pretty much everything Gorillaz have ever released

My ranking though would probably be

    Demon Days
    Plastic Beach
    Song Machine
    Humanz
    Gorillaz
    (Cracker Island)
    The Now Now
    The Fall

I've only heard the new album once but that's a preliminary placing. I've always thought Humanz is way overhated and there's a decent amount of songs on the s/t that I never listen to which explains those placings

    So, confession.

    I just made this post....

    https://forum.chorus.fm/posts/5331851

...and I'd like to say I was just parodying the lyrics, except I totally and absolutely thought that's what Damon was singing.

I thought he was singing "a cow" and not "occult", and it still made all the sense in the world to me.

I also thought Thundercat was singing "I'll drink to that" and not "I drink to riot".

Frankly, I like my version better.

So apparently the three bonus songs are being released:

Captain Chicken with Del the Funky Homosapien
    Controllah with MC Bin Laden
Crocadillaz with Del La Soul and Dawn Penn (which I posted already)

interesting that they seemingly took all the hip-hop off the standard album lol. I wonder why, weird choice

either way those should be a fun listen hopefully
