This album is a bit of an odd one because I actually think this is probably one of their tightest albums in terms of consistency. They chose a sound and just stuck with it the entire time and it's pulled off very nicely. I think it's very strong. Each song sounds like it was written with the other in mind and it almost just feels like one really long song in that sense. But it's also not what I want in a Gorillaz album personally. I loved their wackier, theatrical, conceptual stuff from Demon Days and Plastic Beach and you barely hear that at all recently. And while there are some more energetic songs on the album there's not really much besides the Cracker Island title track that's dark and moody which is something I really like from them. I think the biggest thing that really kind of hurt this album was the roll out. Hearing literally half of the songs before the album kind of made it feel less special and altered my expectations for the album as a whole. I would definitely recommend this album to people, but probably mostly to people who don't listen to Gorillaz funnily enough.
Someone on Reddit described this as their safest and most mainstream album and I completely agree with that. It sounds like anyone could pick it up and just kind of vibe to it and it's very inoffensive in that way.
Just extremely not into that style. Every reggaeton song has the exact same drum beat and it drives me insane.
enjoyed this. not their best but definitely not their worst. I feel like their best songs nowadays are usually when they have no guests (not counting Song Machine).
Definitely enjoyed this on first listen. Might not be their best album, but it feels like the most consistent one. A short 10 song tracklist with no duds. I'll take it.
Kate Bush reached out to Damon Albarn after Gorillaz’ divisive Glastonbury set The headline isn't really telling the whole story because this is a bunch of info about Cracker Island and Gorillaz from a live Q & A they did last night. "Hewlett meanwhile shared his experience of working with Lou Reed, who features on ‘Plastic Beach’ cut ‘Some Kind Of Nature’. “When Lou came to the studio, we were in New York and it was me, Damon and [producer], Remi Kabaka Jr.. Lou walked in, Damon said hi, went to introduce me but Lou said ‘no. You fuck off and you fuck off’. So Remi and I fucked off and went shopping, leaving Damon alone with Lou.” It apparently took six months and a guest appearance at a couple of Gorillaz shows for Reed to start being nice to Hewlett."
I think this sums it up really well. Also I fucking LOVE this quote from Jamie: “I don’t think it’s the best album we’ve ever made though. That makes it sound like for the past 20 years, we’ve been dragging our feet. It’s another good album,” he added.
Oh God this is awesome. 'Synth Riders' announces Gorillaz music pack for PlayStation VR2 edition The full tracklist for the new Gorillaz pack is as follows: ‘Feel Good Inc’ ‘Clint Eastwood’ ‘New Gold’ (feat. Tame Impala and Bootie Brown) ‘Dare’ ‘On Melancholy Hill’ ‘Cracker Island’ (feat. Thundercat) ‘Sleeping Powder’
There's just an unbelievable amount of hate for this album online right now. People want Gorillaz to be what they used to be, which I completely understand, but because of they just completely fail to accept any of their new music for what it is and just label it as shit straight up. It's frustrating how popular it has become to say that Damon sucks or that the band has always been bad/only had a few good hits. I hate the internet.
Anyway, Here's the Japanese bonus track "Crocadillaz" featuring De La Soul. It sounds the most like their self titled album. https://www.reddit.com/r/gorillaz/comments/11b9zio/where_is_crocadillaz/
idk man this sounds so Gorillaz sanitised to me. it's like you scrubbed their sound of all the weird edges that have made it so interesting this whole time. without the satirical pop-culture sendups, the strange production choices and the hip-hop crossover element this kinda sounds like a billion other pop bands glad people are enjoying it and it's doing numbers, but it's not for me at all. gonna check out that bonus track though for sure. it kinda sucks that likely the last ever Gorillaz/De la Soul collaboration didn't even make the album though
