    Newbie

This album is incredible! So much better than Reservoir for me - I couldn’t get into that because of the overproduction, even though I liked the singles.

Unless you’re Jason Isbell, it’s very hard to pull off earnest love songs that feel contemporary, and this album makes it look easy.

“Extraordinary Life” in particular is almost a miracle. I don’t know how it avoids being cloying??

(Not sure if this is too gossipy but: she’s apparently dating fellow Australian Alex Lahey according to the new NME feature and that’s so lovely! happy for them!)

  15. I want Extraordinary Life played at my wedding tbh

This was a tough review to write. Been feeling super unmotivated and the themes of the record struck a chord with me. I edited it out of the review, but I came out as bi in 2015 — online, anyway; my parents found out in 2018. The marriage equality plebiscite in 2017 brought me to the darkest places I’ve ever been to, and yet I feel like I have the privilege of passing as straight since I’ve been with my boyfriend for four years. When Sophie mentioned that she felt like she had never seen someone like her in media — a bisexual person — I understood that. I felt like my emotions were wrong, in some way, and it tore me up inside. When I found out that Michael Stipe called himself bi in the 90s, I couldn’t help crying with relief. One of my favourite artists was like me. Sorry for the tangent but yeah, this album really resonates with me and I’m honoured to have written about it.

This is really excellent. I should've known I'd love it based on the description & the producers involved. SO MUCH GOOD MUSIC COMES FROM AUSTRALIA.

  20. Another fun fact:

“Chris and Zach flew their studio gear from Wisconsin and set up a studio in the cottage for a month to record her next album. 12 cases of Justin Vernon’s studio gear got lost between Wisconsin and Sydney for 3 days. Gordi almost became the artist that lost Bon Iver’s studio gear”

It’s so amazing to me that she idolized Justin growing up and then ends up becoming his friend/musical acquaintance.

Some people have all the luck.

(luck has nothing to do with it she is extremely talented and deserves everything)

I have these moments where I panic
When I shut down and go manic
So eruptive and destructive like within I am volcanic
Have a head that won’t stop aching
And a voice that’s tired of breaking
And I’d snap myself right out and tell you what it’s all about if I knew
