Joel recently on his podcast said that he doesn’t really write lyrics, he mostly just improvises in the booth based on the music. I’m not sure that’s 100% true, but it’s definitely at least partly true and definitely explains some of the more random shit.
Me too, haha. Take a look at my life, all black Take a look at my clothes, all black Like Johnny Cash, all black
The riff just before the chorus in KYHOMG (at 0:38) goes hard but the rest of the song... not so much. I used to love Break Apart Her Heart back in the day. Still like it instrumentally but the lyrics are horrible. Misery and The River are still bangers!
I wonder what the lyric split between Joel and Benji is. And I think Billy only wrote Ghost of You from Chronicles (although that may be one of my least favorite GC songs).
March on isn't too bad either. I always liked the acoustic version of it too. @Jason Tate did you listen to the GMR b-sides at all? Jealousy and Face the Strange are worth listening to IMO.
I don't think so, if they're not on streaming I probably don't have them. Just have The River (Acoustic).
Good Morning Revival could've been killer if it stuck more to the synthy, ravey, post-punk revival vibes it has going on with a few songs and the b-sides. Still think it contains too many clunkers to make it really work as a whole. It's all over the place stylistically but the songs that do hit for me are among my favorites out of their entire discography.
Greetings from California re-listen for the first time in AGES this morning. Enjoying this more than I thought I would (in the first half still).
Onto the second side now. I can see why I didn't like this ten years ago, but it's connecting a lot more today. Big early 90's throwback feeling with it. And in 2014 I was listening to like ... nothing in this vein.
Will do that after work for sure. Haven’t listened to greetings from California in a while but i remember digging a decent number of tracks on it. I feel like i heard once that they did this record to fulfill their contract with capitol records, but i could be wrong.
The first thing that comes to mind for me about this song is that it was inexplicably on the Ruby Tuesday playlist when I worked there in 2008-2009, mixed in with every Train single released up to that point, some Coldplay, and various other adult contemporary whatever, and I thought it was really funny to hear GC included there.
€45 is a little too much for me for the signed one with shipping and duties and all. I already have the Madden Brothers album signed. Cool stuff though.
Little surprised signed was the same price. Like that it's a separate art piece too. My signed Butch Walker one being on the plastic wrap was the most LOL version of one of those that I have.
