Discog dive this week seems in order; let's see if GMR finally clicks? Cardiology started to become an album I like a more all these years later, but GMR is still the one that just never did anything for me.
This is a playlist I made a couple if years ago, as sort of a mini discog run. It’s the reason they are among my most played artists every year. I always throw it on when I don’t know what to listen to.
outside of sex on the radio, cardiology is actually a fairly solid release from them. GMR has some good songs on it, but also sole duds. Will be interested to hear your thoughts on everything after the discog run!
yeah that song is bad, along with something else. Broken hearts parade is a jam though. Always loved the horns even though the band apparently hated them.
Youth Authority does the best on re-listens for me. Just ends up being ridiculously fun and for the summer season you can't really ask for much more. Generation RX also holds up well. Young & The Hopeless is still pretty damn classic and I think as time goes by has become even more influential. There's a lot of newer pop-punk bands these days that sound more like GC than, say, something like NFG. Both bands have made a big mark on the genre but I have found I hear a lot of this early GC melody writing and influence in some of the newer generation. I still find Chronicles boring for the most part. It lacks energy. Just goes on and on. ST is raw around the edges, but still has a ton of nostalgia for me, when it dropped I was suspicious of "industry plant" before I had ever heard the term because I felt plugged into this genre and had never heard of the band before I heard "Little Things" on the radio. Has become a very fun throw back album. Cardiology has grown on me the most over the years. From not liking it at all to putting it toward the upper half of the catalog while not at the highs of their other stuff. (I still hear Eve6's "Blood Brothers" chorus in in "Last Night" every time. Feel like Gilmore reused that one a couple years later for Eve 6 lol.) GMR eh. I dunno, a few songs where I tap my foot, but overall still not working for me. "KYHOMG" is still so so bad. Bring on some new tunes! After the last two albums I'm very optimistic. (Need to listen to the twins solo album next.)
i definitely like chronicles more than you describe, but think your view on it is absolutely valid. interesting thoughts about them possibly being a plant at the time. Seems like you like that album more today? there she goes from cardiology might be one of their most underrated songs imo. Definitely my favorite from it. i listened to youth authority again yesterday. Im confident in saying that i would put it #2 behind young and the hopeless at this point.
I was also like 17 and dumb. But remember driving home from somewhere and turned on the radio and hearing "Little Things" and being like ... wait, why have I never heard of this band before?! And then they were on tour with MxPx, Fenix TX, and I saw them back to back in the span of a few months and was like, oh, ok, this is fun. "The Click" became my answering machine message on my first cell phone Why do I remember this?
My concrete top 3 are S/T, Y&H, and YA, in that order. My least favorite is definitely GMR. The rest are mostly interchangeable depending on the day.
Not sure what my number 3 would be at this point. Honestly if i chose today, it might actually be generation rx. I like that album more than most (but it definitely is too short).
I still like GMR haha. Probably the last album from them I really play apart from the classics. Haven’t listened to much post that album. Not sure if I’m missing out.
