Minus One tackles a good look at the PTSD and shame that Japanese soldiers went though after the war. Godzilla works best when he represents post-war Japan.

 

Man, Minus One was phenomenal.

 

Gonna be real hard to rank Minus One and Shin as 2nd and 3rd behind the original.

Both Shin and Minus One are brilliant in what they deliver but are different Godzilla films altogether.

 

I wish Shin was streaming because I still haven't seen it. Might catch Minus One with Dream Scenario this weekend.

 

Shin is streaming on crunchyroll btw, I watched it last night for the first time and it was incredible

 

Digital is $5 if that's your thing.

 

Minus one ruled

 

Minus One was pretty good. Every atomic breath scene was a highlight. Idk if it’s my favorite Godzilla movie, but it’s easily top 3.

 

What’s better

I admittedly haven’t seen all of them (there’s so many) but none of the American ones from the last decade are close

 

Basic take but the original Godzilla is the best I've seen so far. Haven't seen this yet though

 

The original, Shin, and Minus One will be the big three people juggle around as best and all three could arguably be the best.

The original is amazing because it created Godzilla as what he is, but Shin and Minus One could both be #2 depending on the mood. Do I want post-war Japan? Minus One. Do I want to see Godzilla in the modern world? Shin.

Godzilla '14 is still great. One of the best 'vs' films. Tied with 64's Mothra vs Godzilla.

 

I do like Godzilla 2014 quite alot, but also really enjoy Godzilla 1985. I’d probably rank this second right behind Godzilla ‘14

 

Hoping to see minus one this week

 

Shin is so good and it really highlights the human character flaws in the recent American ones. The biggest criticism of the American ones is that the human characters are just empty filler for the monster and has no one for the audience to care about. Shin doesn’t really have a central character to care about, but the framing of the meaningless bureaucracy jumping from character to character really adds a punch to the loss of human life and builds a connection regardless.

It’s a shame because I feel like the American ones had an opportunity to have a strong climate change allegory and the role our imperialist government has played in it, but traded that in for spectacle and surface level commentary instead.

Don’t get me wrong, they have been fun movies overall but there was a chance for something great.

 

Still waiting for an American film to feature Hedorah. Could easily work that around climate change.

Keep the 70s psychedelia while we’re at it

 

Every Godzilla film, ranked from worst to best

Even as a KotM enjoyer, it is insane to see AV Club have it at #2 lol

 

All Monsters Attack in last place? Not even going to look at the rest

 

The 1954 original will always be the best, but now I would probably have Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, Minus One, Shin, and Mothra vs. Godzilla rounding out the top five.

The AV Club invents new ways to be a shell of its former self. And good lord, could they fit any more ads in there? My screen eventually just turned into a blank page while I was scrolling.

 

They put KOTM above Godzilla 2014?
