Legendary can’t explicitly refer to him as King Kong in certain markets due to Universal Pictures maintaining the merchandising rights for the name ‘King Kong.’
The movie is overall more fun than GvK, but the fights are better in GvK. It works extremely well as a Kong film, demonstrating Kong’s system of justice and his leadership. However, it doesn’t work as well as a Godzilla film. Fans of the comics, though, will enjoy seeing some of those monsters. Kong is basically the Steve Rogers to Godzilla’s Tony Stark. Jia and her new ‘buddy’ make the movie worth it.
lol they show him knock like 4 vehicles out of the sky and then one of them crashes right next to a crowd of dozens but they’re all fine??? and Millie Bobby Brown’s character is listening to a podcast while walking from school with the podcast app just open, staring at it??
I had fun but this is a god awful movie. So fucking bad all around. Were they trying to do a GotG thing with the soundtrack? I think every line of dialogue was exposition.
yeah i did like some aspects and especially dan stevens/brian tyree henry but there a bunch of things that didn’t mesh with others and left a lot of the movie feeling pretty disjointed. actual zilla kong fight is the highlight, for anyone surprised by that
Sadly, not seeing this. Didn’t care for KOTM or GvK. Can’t get better than Minus One. And I still need to see Dune 2.
I did enjoy their rematch and watching Kong drag Godzilla by his tail, if as if he was taking care of his drunk buddy, was pretty funny. Much better than whatever was going on with the fight in Brazil. I zoned out during some of that, ngl. The Hollow Earth fight lost all sense of scope, which really brought my care down to zero. I rolled my eyes at the slow-mo shot of them jumping towards each other.
I know Wingard has plans for a third film and I’m sure it will be as fun and outrageous as GvK and GxK, but I really am not sure if the franchise will survive another completely outlandish movie. It will probably make money but the goofiness will be what defines the franchise to audiences and the possibility of getting anything like 2014 again will be near zero. It could easily go the way of the Showa movies. It’s Thor 3 to Thor 4 all over again. GvK, like Ragnarok, was fun and felt fresh, but Thor 4, like GvK, was just too much in some moments. Marvel is rumored to be course-correcting for Thor 5. Legendary should do the same. Wingard has made good movies that were not outlandish so I know he can do it. Just gotta pivot the plot to not revolve around the Hollow Earth next time.
Movie rules. Godzilla rules. This iteration of Kong is great too. I think this might be my favorite human characters of the MonsterVerse so far, mainly because Dan Stevens is the man and his interactions with Brian Tyree Henry were all great. Maybe it's my bias since me and my son watch the old Godzilla movies every single day, but I thought this was great.
