As a diehard, life-long Godzilla fan, I found this mostly fine. Slots in right alongside KOTM. Wish they had taken this universe in a different direction in general, but oh well.
This was me; felt some parts were pretty laughable, like trying too hard to be cartoony, but then tons of parts that were awesome. Soooo many plot corners cut, hahaha. I actually kind of liked learning the lore in KOTM a bit more, but the human storylines dragged that way down. CGI in this was so in your face, that it felt cheap at times. Thought I'd be totally wowed by this, but instead it's just kind of "Cool, I guess"
This movie was the definition of based AF. The fight scenes were so much better then the past films. Also glad Godzilla beat Kong
I thought it made complete sense for a kid growing up in the 21st century to refer to a robotic creature as a “mecha.” “Mecha” has its own internet fandom.
This ruled. The human stuff was still easily the weakest but there wasn’t nearly as much as KOTM and the fight scenes were dope.
Coulda been a little longer. Felt like there wasn't quite enough fighting and some of the story parts moved a million miles an hour. That said super fun overall.
I’ll have to rewatch it a few times but I may like this just as much as Godzilla 2014, which has been my favorite MonsterVerse film. Watching Mechagodzilla wreck both Godzilla and Kong was beautiful.
If you just are down for Monkey fight Lizard, you should be fine. There's some lore from the previous movie and a locale that's uh... kinda from it? I'd say you'll be fine though. They just kinda breeze through the plot to get to the fights, which was fine by me.
Also, the first episode of the new Japanese anime series ‘Godzilla: Singular Point” aired. Here is the opening. It looks like both Varan and Jet Jaguar make appearances. Gabara, Angurius, and Titanosaurus will also be in the show.
Ah, yeah, I enjoyed her much more in Baby Driver. She basically was here as the cable to connect the power source to MechaG.
I went to see this tonight at a drive-in and the sound cut out with ten minutes left. The movie was paused for about 5 minutes, so my roommate pulled out his phone and we ended up finishing the movie on HBO Max, AND we got free passes. Not a bad night, haha. The movie was totally fine - my basic thoughts are here. A ★★½ review of Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
I like how central Mechagodzilla is to the plot. I thought he was just going to be a “look, the two are done fighting release the robot,” but both Godzilla and Kong are characters that rely on the presence of Mechagodzilla in the film. The cheesy sci-fi plot was also a great throwback to the 60s/70s Godzilla films.
