At our screening today, the main reaction was "Big, dumb and fun." The human stuff, sadly, still sucks. Brian Tyree Henry is hilarious, but Millie Bobbie Brown's character is still such a nothing character (Acting alongside the kid from "Hunt For the WIlderpeople," who's using his native accent, her accent slips so much that you wonder why they didn't just allow her to be British) that it brings the Godzilla side down. On the Kong side, Rebecca Hall's subplot is stuck with the trope-y magical deaf kid, but they're doing their best to keep it afloat. The fights are cool, but also sometimes weirdly shot and edited. I don't understand why Wingard doesn't allow for the camera to pull back so when can get a sense of the geography of the fights. Instead, it's lots and lots of shakey close-ups of Kong punching the camera or Godzilla growling. But there are some undeniably awesome, violent moments that make it worth it. It's also loud as hell. So: Big, dumb, fun. I'm in the minority of liking Godzilla 2014 the most, along with "Skull Island." This is probably lower than that, but not as low as "King of the Monsters."
Is it true that Godzilla ultimately wins both fights (nearly drowning Kong in the ocean and knocking him out during the HK battle) while Kong kills MechaG? Does MechaG also have a red beam?
According to the guy who leaked some key scenes, an "Ultimate Edition" of the film with 45 extra minutes is being prepared for a later release.
Sorry for liking months old posts. Just read though the thread. Happy to see the love for G2014, which in the pandemic has actually become a comfort movie for me, the cinematography is so good, the suspense builds beautifully and you feel rewarded by the fights. I remember being amazed that the guy from Monsters was chosen. And Shin Godzilla. I think my memory might be tricking me into thinking G vs Biollante was better than it was, but I'll be damned if the final Biollante version didn't look awesome. Kotm was terrible unfortunately, especially because the humans were insufferable and their story terrible. And killing off Watanabe, wtf (after treating him like a caricature of himself). My expectations for this are very low, so I stopped caring about if I accidentally read any spoilers. What are the people's thoughts on the first Cloverfield btw? For me the best "recent" American monster movie before G2014
Review embargo lifted - seems like this is the movie we were hoping for 'Godzilla vs Kong' Early Buzz: Here's What Critics Are Saying About the Ultimate Monster Showdown https://collider.com/godzilla-vs-kong-reviews-reactions/
I quite liked Cloverfield; it was a fresh take on the monster genre, especially with getting to see things play out from the human on the ground perspective. And to think now we're getting a proper sequel makes me want to go back and watch the original again
After the lackluster visuals of KOTM, I’m extremely excited for this franchise to get the outstanding visuals that it deserves.
