I think I liked a lot of Skull Island, but the zealotry of Samuel L's character just kind of annoyed me a lot.
Skull Island was a bad movie that was kind of fun and unfortunately I found Godzilla '14 a slog to get through when I revisited it. KOTM is def my favorite so far, but none are without their issues.
I knew KOTM would suck as soon as Dougherty was announced as director. Everything he touches suffers from it.
I honestly don't think there are any excuses for KotM to be as bad as it is. That movie should be a fucking grand slam and it is absolutely not that. I thought it was really fucking bad, although I do see how some people could enjoy it if they were able to look past it's glaring weaknesses. Like if the awful things about it weren't deal-breakers for you, I suppose you could appreciate some of the cool stuff it does. I would argue that there are SyFy movies starring Ian Zehring that are actually better movies, albeit with much less nice/expensive looking special effects. I thought Skull Island was really fun as opposed to kind of fun. I can't argue that it's a good movie, cuz it's really not, but I thought it was fun as all hell. I think Graeth Edwards' Godzilla is a really, really solid movie that falls short of being a masterpiece but gets closer than most big budget blockbusters these days.
I did not realize the director of that Godzilla sequel was one of the writers of X2. Shows how much I pay attention. X2 does, indeed, rule, & is still in the top tier of movies based on Marvel Comics in spite of being from 2003. Anyways, the 2014 Godzilla rules. So good. Haven't seen either other film in this world; not really interested in doing so. Finally watched Shin Godzilla not that long ago, which was super cool. A little curious about this one, especially since Rebecca Hall is in it. We'll see.
I liked that they get to the island and meet kong in like the first 25 mins but the movie took a turn for the worst when John c reilly showed up. And I know I'll take some heat for that opinion but I don't think he works in this kind of movie. Also slow motion action is terrible and should be abandoned.
Also, y'all should watch Kaiju Mono because it stars the two greatest wrestlers in the world. k im done
Pacific Rim for me is less than the sum of it's parts, and it really bums me out. Has since I first watched it in theaters back on it's initial release. I don't know what it is.
