Alright, someone help me out here. Seeing this on Thursday night and keen AF. Haven't spent a lot of time with the Godzilla franchise, seen the (1999/2000?) Matthew Broderick shitshow, and seen the 2014 reboot. Remember hating it but might revisit. Saw Kong: Skull Island, does that tie in? Someone give me the best ones, in order, including the new AppleTV+ series, which I haven't visited yet. Which ones are linked/standlone, etc.? I don't need to go back to the 50's/60's/70's, etc. let's go from the 2014 reboot.
Godzilla Minus One is completely stand alone. It isn’t connected to any other Godzilla film. The Legendary, American-made Godzilla movies are the ones that are attempting to build a shared universe.
From the 2014 reboot? Films: Only Shin Godzilla lol King of the Monsters (2019) is okay as we finally have Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan with a Hollywood budget, but the the fight scenes are in rain, volcanic smoke, and snow. It's hard to follow and the story between the fights is almost unwatchable. Minus One is stand-alone. It doesn't tie in anything. Shows: Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is good, especially if you were into the 2014 film. We're only on episode 4 of 10, however. Avoid the Netflix trilogy at all costs. I would highly recommend going back to the some of the older films. At least the original 1954 film and 1964's 'Mothra vs Godzilla.' If you're okay with something that's fun and safe (not insulting to your time) I would recommend 1964's 'Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster', 1975's 'Terror of Mechagodzilla', 1984's 'The Return of Godzilla' and 2001's 'GMK' - the later of which features a Godzilla possessed by the souls of the victims of WW2. It was the main influence for Minus One.
Not to get too off topic, but could we consider the Showa series as a shared universe? It's mostly direct sequels, but there are some "solo" films such as '61 Mothra and '56 Rodan. I like to imagine 'Destroy All Monsters' at the "Infinity War" due to it taking place after the other films and we have multiple monsters teaming up to take down Ghidorah once and for all. But the films can sometimes feel disjointed due to three different groups of aliens showing up instead of just one.
Didn’t know that but figured it was only a matter of time being that Ultraman was created by the special effects director of the original Godzilla.
Are you talking about that anime trilogy? I actually enjoyed that. I liked how Ghidorah was worshipped like a cult.
There were cool ideas but I felt bored with the human characters and plot. Very bad execution for most of it, imo
Haven't seen it in a long time, but I was a huge fan of that Godzilla. I remember reading the novel version several times, and my Mom got me a movie-branded blanket as well. And had a movie poster on my wall for a bit, along with buying the soundtrack on CD
yeah, this ruled. If I were to nitpick, I didn't love how they handled the foreshadowing of the ejection seat, mainly the cut-away when the mechanic was about to show Shikishima. It just felt like an awkward showing of the cards when I think most viewers would have picked up on it without that.
I wonder where they could take a sequel. Koichi's "war" is over and Godzilla coming back to wreck havoc in Japan would just retread what we saw in this film.
