Yeah incredible movie score was amazing, the music during the first “family montage” was some explosions in the sky gorgeousness
This was so great. If I made a list of everything I want out of a monster/action/disaster movie it checked basically every box. There were points where it felt more like Jaws than Godzilla which I wasn’t expecting but it worked perfectly. I’ve had a ton of fun with all the modern US godzillas, but I’ve seen a bunch of people elsewhere say this really hammers home how much Edwards dropped the ball with the human characters in 2014 and I can’t disagree.
It's been a minute since I last watched Godzilla 2014 but I do remember loving it. I think what I loved about it is how they built and teased up to seeing Godzilla and the monsters fighting. I feel like every monster movie since is so quick with revealing the monsters and they're just in your face from the start. I get that is why we are there obviously, but did love the approach in 2014.
From the character aspect, I agree. But I think he made up for it in style. Neither KOTM or GvK had any style and the human characters somehow sucked even worse.
Yeah don't get me wrong, 2014 is pretty great in its own right, I just thought the comparison to this is pretty striking. and admittedly I kind of love the other two, especially KOTM in spite of their flaws - KOTM is just stupidly fun
The pre-mutated Godzilla in this film is leagues beyond the one in Godzilla vs King Ghidorah. I also appreciated that the mutation occurred specifically to Operation Crossroads. Linking it to a direct historical event helps the story feel more real.
”The process of making a kaiju film is like a kagura, a dance to please and calm the gods, where you place these problems into the shape of a kaiju to help process some of these worries, almost like a ceremony.”
you can see him treading water in this one when they're trying to get those canisters wrapped around him
