I wasn't expecting MC to be favored over there but, their review describes my initial impression... after SOOO many listens it's grown on me a lot.
Oh fuck no he didn't just talk shit about strange hours Also the album doesn't "generate atmosphere", really??????
Hopefully this isn't too condescending, but I suspect there are some people who just don't "get" the melodic ideas in records like this because they're too dissonant and abrasive. Some of the descriptions I've read from fans who are let down by MC, including P4k's, allude to this. They invariably describe it as being one-dimensional in a way that doesn't make objective sense to me at all. It's like they're hearing a version of the music with most of the melodic sensibilities stripped out. The fact that MC "knocks you on your ass" is the least of the reasons why I love it.
"Without Dillinger Escape Plan to use as an outlet anymore, drummer Billy Rymer pushes his new band to their most feral extremes, shuttling from groove-metal, d-beat insanity, free-form dub, and tabla-spiked drone in consecutive tracks." I hate when reviewers can't be bothered to do simple research. A. Dillinger is still active, even if for another couple of weeks, but they were very much so when Billy tracked the drums on MC B. He's not in this band C. He had nothing to do with the tabla rhythms created on the record
If I had given the album a review after my first listen, it would probably echo that Pitchfork review. But, it's really an album that rewards the next few listens. There's a lot more nuance to it than initially meets the eye.
That little break in Pompeii where Daryl sings, "And it won't take much to get the rest of us". Is one of my favorite moments on the album.
Ever since someone pointed out how they lifted(?) the riff from “Fault and Fracture” in “Bibleland 6” I can’t unhear it
Overall I was fairly underwhelmed first listen which seemed to be the consensus, so hopefully it will grow on me. Bibleland 6 was prob my favorite song
New Material Control merch up in the store. I know they've always been this way but those prices are ridic
I used to have a black GJ w/ dark yellow logo, but it's way too big on me now. Not a big fan of the newer stuff
I liked the floral pocket tee and the beanie. That was about it though, much more prefer their colorful merch.
Just listened to this whilst doing yard work. It was a 10/10 yard work sesh. Wanted to do bass slides with my rake every 15 seconds. Also I was going pretty ham during Pompeii.
