I’m not sure the right way to start a thread, but I was just surprised this name hadn’t come up on this forum so I thought I should at least try.

This guy is likely to blow up big here in Australia.

A fantastic debut album, with contributions from one of my absolute faves, Kirin J Callinan.

To become a convert simply check out the recent live performances on Triple J Like a Version. The Sex Pistols cover in particular is unreal.

My buddy sent me “A Song About Fishing” yesterday. I don’t share your optimism after one listen but I’ll give the album a shot!

(Would recommend adding some choice song embeds to OP for folks to check out. People are lazy.)

Thanks mate. If I knew what I was doing I agree links would be good!

My optimism (in terms of popularity) could certainly be misplaced - I listen to hip hop quite rarely. (Not that this is pure hip hop at all) I’m far more likely to have something like Holy Sons, Black Country New Road, Joni Mitchell, Fruit Bats, Nick Cave or The Weather Station on.

But I am such a big fan of the guest guitarist, Kirin J, that I gave this a real go and I can see it being very popular.

Genesis himself seems phenomenal in terms of stage presence too.

I think A Song About Fishing could seem a bit weak on its own. It fits nicely though within the flow of the album.

  4. Will check this out. I only recognise Kirin J Callinan from that song with Jimmy Barnes :crylaugh:

He worked on the first Night Game album and runs in circles with Alex Cameron. I unabashedly love this song of his.

His 2nd album, Bravado, (which contains that Barnesy track) is so good.

I took my 6yo and 3yo sons to see Kirin at their first pub gig a couple of months ago. He came out in full medieval attire with knee high stilletos, performed by himself and just crushed it.

This promo video was a bit of a laugh and insight into his personality

    hmmm

Yeah I need to spend some time with this. There's some really cool stuff here, particularly with his vocals - some of the clipped delivery, the soft falsetto, talk-singing too (Waitin On Ya really reminds me of Prince with the back-and-forth soft falsetto hook/spoken word parts).

goddamn this is so good, I wish I gave it time before

love the live band and the diversity in his voice, insanely assured debut. "The Other Black Dog", "Centrefold", "Gold Chains" and "A Song About Fishing" are straight up 10/10s

remix of "Don't Need You" with Mick Jenkins is well worth a spin too

New song from the SWNT sessions that was cut because it didn't fit the vibe of the record (but is still great)
