Not a flier but I imagine the average airfare rises and falls based on more than just legroom, i.e. demand, price of fuel, etc. His point could still be correct in that the prices could have risen even higher without the reduced legroom.

Of course, there's a severe lack of competition anymore so capitalism aint working there, and IIRC didn't a lot of airlines start charging for extras that used to be included in airfare, like checked bags and such?

Jet fuel is insanely cheap. Airlines get a very good deal, (In comparison to say, non-airline jet fuel or general aviation fuel). I believe it is something like $1.20 a gallon.

I think the rise in cost is due more to increased demand and increased need for pilots as pilots retire and are not being replaced quickly enough at the major airline level, leading to more pay for the pilots that are there to make up for the amount they are flying.
