Wait, they said that Lyme cures itself? Because that's not necessarily true. It's not like a common cold.. usually you want a 30 day prescription of antibiotics immediately to be safe. Like syphilis, the bacteria are screw-like spirochetes which are capable of burrowing into cysts and tissues to hide themselves from showing up on tests and can even lay dormant for awhile. I'm glad you're feeling better from it!

Yep, there's a huge fight over it. Lots of evidence to back up its existence, but as soon as the medical communities label something as "chronic", insurance companies don't like that because it means long-term coverage. At the very least, there is strong evidence of long-term side effects, autoimmune reactions, and coinfections. All depends on the person

Oh no they gave me antibiotics but they said the blood work would take longer than the course of treatment so they didn't bother. Maybe they ripped me off somehow but I feel fine so whatever. And yeah I've read about that before it's wild

There shouldn't be because chronic Lyme can kill people if left untreated.

The debate comes from quacks saying Lyme is the cause of any ache or pain a patient comes in with. So you'll have a patient with chronic migraines diagnosed as chronic Lyme and that leads to confusion among everyone.

Ohh okay good I'm glad! Some docs are even hesitant to give antibiotics and it's insane because it's pretty normal to prescribe something like doxycycline even for people who have issues with acne lol

Most of my Lyme patients have had negative blood work because it takes 2-3 weeks post exposure to turn positive. I just treat.

Patients are being treated earlier so your blood work likely will never show positivity.

My favorite part was she just goes "but I read an article".

After that encounter the other doc I was with takes me to her office and goes "fuck Trump".

For most people who catch the disease early, a 2-4 week course of antibiotics is usually enough that it doesn't cause any long-term problems. My dad had Lyme but noticed the rash and treated it right away, and he has no lingering effects.

I went untreated for at least 4 years, and went to 8 different doctors before getting an actual diagnosis. Several doctors that I saw tried to convince me it was something else, that I had depression, that it was allergies, etc. I had sinus surgery and I had my gallbladder removed before anyone even considered that it might be Lyme. The testing is incredibly unreliable, and the only credible testing lab is not covered by insurance. I had to pay $1200 out of pocket to find out I had Lyme and Babesiosis. The past few years have been a nightmare, but it felt good to finally get a real diagnosis. Lyme is a growing problem, and it's only going to get worse as the climate warms. I wouldn't wish this disease on anyone.

100% this. Fighting with insurance companies over diagnosis codes is the worst. I know of at least two really good doctors that are retiring early because of the insurance landscape.

Like yes there's insurance fraud and companies should counter that. And every insurance company has different standards for coverage.

If only you could have a centralized system that could set common reasonable standards. Absurd, I know .

Oh god I'm sorry you've had to deal with this. It sounds like you had a lot of the same experiences as me. It's so frustrating knowing that the most commonly used tests are known for false negatives and false positives, not even testing for all bands. I started exhibiting extreme neurological symptoms in 2nd grade, was treated like I was crazy, and just kind of sucked it up for years. Then in 8th grade, my sister was diagnosed, so they checked the entire family and I turned out to have it. When I started on meds I immediately started getting old symptoms that I hadn't had in years as a reaction. Had to be homeschooled for two years in highschool and my family went bankrupt going to specialists that couldn't take insurance. I definitely don't wish it on anyone, either.
