it’s Florida. 2016, 2018, 2020 were all the same story: polls show it’s gonna be close and then they turn out to be way off. I’m not getting any hopes up

Yes, it does, which is basically why they still exist. They’re a tourism attraction.

That said, during a time when the poorest amongst our nation are facing a winter of choosing between heating their property or eating enough food, it’s a bad look to have an old rich man undergo a wildly expensive ceremony so he can wear a new hat.

If he has any sense of PR and image, during his national address this evening he will state the need for it to be as low key as possible. It would genuinely help how he is viewed I think. Now Liz has gone, I think the whole royal family are in a very precarious position.

 

If the monarch is supposed to serve the people or the kingdom or whatever it’s pretty easy to demand all the money they make go back to the people. If it’s the other way around and people are supposed to serve the monarch then get rid of it they’re a trash family anyway.

 

Liz was a relatively good monarch optics wise. i'm not sure charlie will inherit that good will.

 

It's honestly insane to me that "monarchies are anachronistic and should, in principle at least, be abolished" is at all controversial in 2022. I mean I know I'm wildly left of the masses of the anglosphere but I think I do fair job of keeping all that in the perspective of mainstream politics. But this has really surprised me lol

 

Multiple friends and family members are enamored with them (all left leaning, as well). I think it still excites people. Why? I don't know, but there is still plenty of space for them.

 

Its really wild to see so many British people on twitter defending the monarchy with stuff like, their gracefulness!

The parasitic royal family has really grown into the brain of a lot of the population. Propaganda and tradition is a hell of a curse to break.

My favorite is "but she presided over so much of the dialing-back of the colonial project and the monarchy's power in general" as if that was all her idea and not the result of massive global backlash.
