My ex did a rewatch of Friends a while back. I had never seen anything other than a handful of episodes prior, but my impression was that all of these people are terrible. Rachel seems sadistic; Ross entitled; Joey and Chandler are rapists and/MRA's; Phoebe is a narcissist that has killed people; Monica is the only good one, but she definitely had a strange relationship with a doctor that knew her as a child and she clearly has some sort of disorder about cleaning that goes unaddressed throughout the series.

It's so jarring watching shows from that time period. Like I like Friends and Scrubs but sometimes I have to do a double take at what they allowed on there. There are still messed up shows but I'm glad with social media and stuff they're at least held more accountable.

30 rock can be messy but its way more, i guess the word is 'progressive' than the other three shows.

 

I thought Barney was an outrageous character meant to be over the top. Then I realized that some people are really like that.

I mean my favorite show is Friends so I'm prob def not one to talk haha. But I guess to me it makes a difference if someone is critical of what they're watching vs blindly defending it

 

Barney's whole schtick was to lie to women, pretend to be someone else, get them drunk or manipulate them, no? There was also some book that came out for how to be like him, which shows how much he stood for an awesome dude. Ted was the worst, though. He had similar issues, but it was usually couched between some sort of emotional devastation that allowed them to justify it.

 

It's like they don't even know he's a gay guy pretending to be straight.
