Oh, yeah, that's right, it was all like 20+ years ago. That's such a bullshit thing to have a statute of limitations on.

That would be the statute of limitations. I believe after the audio surfaced one of the victims attempted to come forward, but the abuse was over 3 decades old and so she was told the statute of limitations had run.

EDIT: Ah! Someone beat me to it. My lawyer knowledge was gonna be useful for once!

I think here rape's statute is like 7 years which is unbelievable.

Seven years is a really long time as far as statutes go. Most of the ones I had to work around at the law firm were 3 years or less.

The problem with removing statutes for sexual assault is then it sets a precedent for removing statutes for everything else. I'm not saying I'm for keeping statutes for sexual assault, but just that removing them will have a vast series of consequences completely outside those sorts of cases.

And in general, there is a good policy grounding the desire to compel bringing cases as soon as possible. Preservation of evidence, failing memories, etc.

Unfortunately, with victims of rape and sexual assault there are also plenty of reasons why someone might not come forward until later and in some cases much later. And the current system doesn't really allow much accommodation for that.

I'm going through Fraiser right now (love it), then I plan to watch Cheers after that. I know, it's backwards. How are you liking it?

I like it! Some of the joke-writing seems hacky now, but I think it's important for me to keep in mind that they probably weren't hacky when the show came out. The acting is fantastic and the writing is very solid, regardless.

Cheers has the greatest theme song of any show in television history.

I was in the car with my dad the other day and I had BMTH - Sempiternal playing and he says, no lie, "did he just say sand pit turtle?" I lost it and laughed for a solid 5 minutes.

Truth. I've actually never seen the series, but I know every word to the song somehow. I did watch the pilot like last week, will probably go through and eventually watch a lot of it. Where everybody knows your naaaaame...

Not a fan of people coming in and wishing they hadn't missed bashing a band I have much love for. I don't want to get all "2007 Julie loves Pete Wentz" ish up in here.

I mean not everyone likes the same shit and has reasons for not liking it. People don't reserve their opinions on things because some like it. That's the point of discussion.

It's how we approach the conversation that matters. This isn't really related to the last discussion, but being condescending and personally insulting others is too far. Or saying stuff like "You must be sad to like/not like ___" "I laugh at people who like/don't like this" or "How does <genre/media> have fans?" It's like, I'm sure a lot of people could say similar for stuff you like/don't like too, but they're not inconsiderate enough to say it. Have actual discussion instead of being snarky or rude, basically. It just happens too often for people to actually try to understand each other or have a productive conversation about differing opinions.
