I have a lot of family that have/are currently deployed to the Middle East. I'm still, years later, trying to decide how I feel about it as a whole. Just seeing some of the PTSD affects firsthand are rough, and that's on this side. I can't imagine the impact for some of the people-groups over there, as well.

 

Regardless of the topic or person in question, I can never vibe with people who choose to chastise something that petty in a serious manner. That's an automatic way to make me not take anything someone says seriously, ha.

 

That right there is he hardest thing for me to grasp in the past couple years. I get that statistically I'm probably more privileged but does that discredit everything I have to say because I don't fit their background?

 

I was told a story about a convoy going through Iraq. There was an old man shouting in the middle of the road for them to stop. A high ranking official got out to talk to him but the man was incensed. One of the guys traveling with the officer shot the guy in the head and threw him out of the way.

People see that kind of shit and formulate strong opinions about it. Things like that are why terrorism exists.

 

I don't really think of it as discrediting, necessarily. The way I see it, my voice and my experiences do not lend themselves to take part in that type of discussion. What outrage do I have or what stories do I have to tell with my own positionality that would be more powerful than that of the group actually being offended or affected by her language? Ya know? I don't take offense to the "white male" thing, I simply don't fit into the conversation aside from being a microphone for other voices/viewpoints to be heard. I'm okay with that.

I think a lot of people use her as a jump off to say gross stuff. Like they wait for her to say something ignorant so they can call her a "bitch" or worse a "c***". There's ways to discuss someones hateful behavior without being bigoted yourself. Also criticize her words and don't throw some weird blanket on it about her looks, music or career otherwise.

 

After reading what she said I don't think anyone is off base publicly admonishing it. That was actually surprisingly bad. Like damn. But ya bigotry is never an excuse to beget bigotry.

lol yeah I mean I don't really have any problem with people being like "woah that was fucked up she's wrong" but taking it to insults or name calling or anything like that comes off weird to me

 

Why can't people just use social media for pictures of animals and memes?

 

I really don't get it.

I know what it's like to experience racism. So I would not insult someone with racism.

I only recently made a twitter to follow all of those absurdist twitter accounts in that one thread. Good decision.

 

It bums me out when someone starts out strong with objective reasons why the thing is problematic and raises good points, then finishes with a onslaught of petty/racist/etc insults. Like. You almost had it.

I dunno, social media and society's use of it really bums me out 87% of the time.

I haven't logged in to Twitter in at least two years. I was only using it for hockey news on deadline and free agency days anyways.

I'm pretty high up in posts, not as high up in likes as I'd like to be, and not even in the points list give me my internet points!

 

I leave the room at family gatherings when politics are brought up. Thankfully my immediate family never discusses them

 

I loathe how Banks uses the f word. Awful.

 

I'm at the point where I leave the room at work if the guys talk about video games or comics at all. lol I'm the worst kind of elitist.

 

My mom forbids political discussion when I visit because I am the only non Mormon and also not Republican and it gets heated between me vs everyone very fast.

 

Are there Democrat Mormons? Serious question. I don't know much about the religion.
