That's tough. I no longer feel like trying to educate people so when I hear stuff like that I just jab at them a bit.

"You can't marry a woman who is smarter than you? Well guess you'll never get married."

  2. That sounds terrible. I'm so used to being surrounded by other English majors I never even thought of having to deal with those kinds of people once I leave school.

I HATE how it's looked at as a negative quality when girls like sports. It's just ignorant.

Yeah I do stuff like that too haha but today I had to be like "Two of your coworkers are lesbians. How do you think they would feel if they heard you talking like this?"

    "WOOOOAH ITS JUST JOKES BRO"

    Ugh

I just want to say Panera's bagels are so much better than Brueggar's Bagels.

Idk I struggle a lot with holding people accountable for terrible things they say. I need to do better at that, badly.

I dont even get how it's a thing people think about to be honest. A friend of my wife from college (who's now a better friend of mine) always talks to me about football and baseball and knows more than anyone I know. She's an encyclopedia of facts and stats. I never thought twice about it until one day she was upset telling me about some guy doing this and not wanting to go out with her because of it. I didn't even realize this was a thing. Educated myself more and apparently this is a real mindset. Stupid.

My SO would need to understand that during Football season I need to do nothing but watch Football look at my phone and yell about my fantasy teams. So sports knowledge is a plus.

Honestly if I tried to correct everyone in my life every time they said something problematic I'd lose my mind. I mean, my dad grew up in the 50's, and I love him and he is very open minded and compassionate, but he didn't know there could be genders other than man and woman until like a month ago. For example.

Also, people at my school, on social media, etc are generally terrible. I try to deal with it when I can but sometimes the best I can do is just ignore and walk away.

I've cared less and less about sports as the years have gone by. If I'm home and something is on, I'll usually put it on if I can get a good stream. Wrestling is the only thing I go out of my way to watch.

I used to, until I realized that hesitation from folks like us who want to check the verbal turds that come out of some people's mouths is what proliferates so much of it. Everyone has the right to say what they want, sure, but I also have the right to tell you you're being an asshole.

    quick question

how bad is it to put your date of birth on an academic CV (for a lab position)? if it's a selling point rather than a detriment and would help explain other shortcomings, is it okay to leave it in or should i leave it out and find a way to work my age into the interview/meeting instead?

My dad's pro-Trump, which I initially thought was more of a "thinks Trump is funny", but I think now he's serious about it. I had a serious conversation with him a year or so ago that all political/social issue-related topics are off the table for us for the sake of our relationship. Other than the daily Bible verses on Facebook (his own, not mine), he's been pretty good about it.

Yeah I left the Mormon faith about 2 years ago now and all my family that is still there still thinks this same way. It's how they were raised and they don't even want to consider changing in most cases. And social media can be terrible (I know first hand I used to be the same way) but I've started deleting people from my life that say horrible shit that I know I probably wont see again anyway.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to ask age in a job application/interview other than "are you at least 18"... right?

presumably you're including schooling so they can calculate your age based on that so I don't think that's necessary

I told my sixty-something year old co-worker that sex and gender were two different things. I told him to google it and after finding that out he just looked at me speechless.

We get along when it comes to discussions of racism.

I'm only on here during work (typically), and I always feel weird coming back to threads after they've expanded to like 20 more pages since I saw them last. I'm like that guy who walks into the group conversation just as the punch line is told, and laughs really loud to try and fit back in.

it's not really a job application where he would ask me those types of questions, more of an informal 'i want to spend a year helping you with your research and i promise i won't break anything' type deal. my age would help sell me because i'm four years younger than my peers but idk if it would be considered ~unprofessional~ to have it in a CV

I don't even care where the chat is currently at in this thread. I just come in, say something random, and dip out. Like this:

I've had my hair buzzed for the past ten years, and I finally wanted to let it grow out, so I'm doing just that. I realized this morning I've really lost a lot of hair, so I think I'm going to buzz it again.

I wouldn't include it - your experience is the relevant thing, not your age.

I don't watch sports but my equivalent would be music and video games, and I'm super fortunate and grateful that my girlfriend is into both of those things. Common traits are a wonderful thing. If I was into sports, I'd love to date someone who was too. In fact, if my girlfriend was into sports, I'd be into that too despite not being into sports bc I like new things and it might change my mind if I talk to someone passionate about it.
