yeah hamilton might have been an abolitionist but that doesn't mean he wasn't racist (he def was, anti-racism even among abolitionists wasn't even a big thing until like immediately before the civil war) and also jefferson was like, the exact opposite? its all just weird to me. i get the idea of reclamation and performing history through a different lens but theres a lot to unpack there especially with the chosen medium and i just kinda think the first rap musical could have been about like, basically anything other than a bunch of white dudes arguing over whether black people should be slaves.

I might just bite the bullet and do it! She says she's only seen 2 female employees so far. I like to think (and I will sleep better) that the person didn't know because it is criminal and deadly to give blood when you know you have HIV or AIDS.

Much of the cast are POC. Lin-Manuel Miranda who wrote the play and plays Hamilton is Puerto Rican. Thomas Jefferson is played by an African American. The Schuyler Sisters are a trio of interracial sisters.

edit: oh, or are you just referring to the founding fathers in general?

im aware, thats what im talking about. you dont think its weird for someone who repeatedly raped his slaves to be played by a black man and argue on stage in favor of slavery (my understanding is that the debate over slavery is one of the Big Moments in the show)? its sick we have an all poc cast and theyre portraying a time period and events that would normally never be available, but you dont think its a little weird to have black men on stage rapping in favor of slavery? like, rapping is an artform born out of cities and conditions created by the aftermath of slavery and jim crow from traditional storytelling methods passed down through slavery primarily as a way of expressing political discontent and frustration. on a very basic level it just rings weird to me. i dont expect everyone or anyone to agree - some quick googles turns up a few people talking about what i am elsewhere on the internet, presumably with more authority and experience to inform their views - but i see people lose their goddamn minds over it and never talk about contemporary rap or anything else...like. it really just comes across to me a lot as a different variation of "i LOVE macklemore. he has a message! he doesn't just rap about money and hoes and bling!" and im kind of letting form of fandom taint my perspective i guess, coupled with the whole "what kind of person doesn't like hamilton??" talk in here. and im not saying anyone here is guilty of either of those things, i know lots of you listen to rap and everything. its just kind of my initial thoughts on it without reading much about it or looking into it too far.

craig jenkins pretty much hit my exact thoughts on it. here's after the hamilton grammy performance

and here he is immediately following kendrick's grammy performance, which is pretty much exactly how i felt

That's not at all what it's about though? There are maybe 4 references to that throughout the 2 and a half hour play?

its literally just Hamilton's life story. It has nothing really to do with them battling over whether slavery should exist and I feel like that's a categorically false assertion to go in with. If you don't like it that's fine, but I wouldn't exactly speak to what the subject matter of the play is without actually having heard any of it.

had a nice tandoori chicken sandwich with yoghurt and mango chutney for lunch today. so good.

honestly tho, accidentally stumbling into a future thread was probably up there with greatest musical finds of 2015 for me.

Yeah I definitely understand where you're coming from. I just think you have to actually experience they way they present the art form before you outright say it doesn't deserve to be told in this fashion and there are other stories that are more deserving to be told in this fashion. There are a lot of people who have experienced more prejudicial and racist treatment than you and I who have seen the play and say it speaks to something greater about race relations in the US history than simply a bunch of white guys playing white slave owners (a la 1776)

if im being totally blunt about it, i need to see another founding father's story get told like i need another hole in my head. hard pass on pretty much everything about it.

Fair enough. There are definitely some that feel the same way you feel. I don't mean to suggest that everyone feels the way I feel about it. There are dissenting voices out there to be sure: “Hamilton: the Musical:” Black Actors Dress Up like Slave Traders…and It’s Not Halloween

And I think that's important too, don't get me wrong. These are complicated issues to be sure. I'm still trying to unpack all of it myself. I've read up a lot on what the perception of black critics and the public perception of the play are and how sometimes they differ dramatically.

im not saying its solely about that, and im definitely not saying my perspective supercedes anyone else's. obviously there are lots of people of color who get a lot out of it and think its great and thats all well and good, i think its great that there's some actual diversity on what is probably the whitest arena of art possible (both in actors and in audience), that kind of representation is incredible and is a net positive pretty much no matter what. im just saying that personally, i dont see it for it and i think its got a host of issues right off the bat kind of make it DOA for me.

ive only been to broadway for school trips anyway, so its not like im gonna go see it either way. and i dont have any desire to listen to the life story of a rich politically powerful white dude get rapped to me. like how does that not sound patently ridiculous to you on its face? it could be executed perfectly wrt actual rapping and still be fuckin' weird to me.
