I’m kinda glad. I was worried coming here that I’d see creepy shit like that and was very glad to discover it was bs lol. I didn’t wanna walk into a country assuming everybody was a pedo...doesn’t really help international relations lmao

Apparently the US is the biggest importer or all the weird hentai shit folk actually associate with Japan. It’s almost primarily made FOR the US supposedly! Can’t remember where I heard/read that so can’t say it with actual certainty, but I swear I’ve seen stats stating that rehashed a number of different places.

Don’t get me wrong - anime is everywhere here and I have my reservations about a lot of it because let’s not pretend a great deal of it isn’t doe-eyed young girls in short skirts with massive tits acting all shy. Just yeah it’s absolutely not just a case of Japan being pervs. Supply and demand.

Japanese wasn’t a requirement for my job and you are told not to use it around students anyway, because they’ll get lazy once they know you can speak it and not bother with English. But staff really love when I speak Japanese in the staffroom, they all applaud me ahahah.

 

I appreciate you dispelling this for me, I’ve had a lot of preconceived ideas about Japan and this has been an educational enlightenment for me about it.

 

Oh god don’t worry about it lmao - I walked in expecting some right pervy pedo shit. Had the exact same notions mate. It’s out there. For example, I know folks come from all over to have teenagers in maid outfits sing and dance for them at maid restaurants in big cities... it just absolutely isn’t to the extent Western media implies.

I’ll go as far to say I’ve legitimately not seen anything even remotely close to what I expected in regards to pervy shit. This is a really backwards place in terms of sex. Japan is an interesting place but it’s def below Paris and Rome in my “would like to visit” list. The US and Japan could go to toe to toe in fucked up shit we’ve done so that’s comforting in a weird way

Nah I mean that’s just a stereotype, I found most folk to be helpful. I’ve found that stereotype to be more accurate the more rural you go. (In the south of France for example.) Just there’s some pretty rough places that creep me out. Like most cities I guess. And the biggest rats + cockroaches I’ve ever seen in their subway/metro system. But above ground, for the most part, it’s a gorgeous place. Like there’s some stunning places. Food is fantastic too. Spent a lot of my time there going to tiny bistros, bakeries, cafes and museums. The Eiffel Tower is soooo good at night though. It flickers and does this really pretty af light show at like 7pm every night.

Also I bumped into FKA Twigs at the top of the tower so there’s that.

I’d really really recommend the catacombs if possible. I missed out but that shit FASCINATES me. I was really lucky getting to see the Notre Dame as many times as I did before the accident too. That one stung me.
