Post this again so I can like it twice. They absolutely nail how this has always been who she was without downplaying how much the writers played into her as a hero at the expense of the viewers and the story.

I read up on David Benioff a bunch today and everything that I read made me like him less. To be honest, I liked him mainly on the strength of his book City of Thieves, but did remember thinking it was cool that he wrote the screenplay for his own novel 25th Hour back in like 2002 and then landed the gig writing Troy for Wolfgang Petersen.

That loneliness is not a function of solitude.

I remember liking Troy quite a bit when it came out. Wonder how it holds up...

That was perfect. I tried telling people a lot of this stuff when they complained it was out of nowhere - the only “compassionate” things she ever did were political moves and even then she acted like they were stupid. There was a conflict in that she would SAY her goal was to rid the world of tyranny and make it a better place, but her actions would always point towards wanting to rule and conquer by any means. It just finally came out when she was put in a situation where she had no support from the common people and decided they were of no use to her. She didn’t “go mad” as we could see in the last episode.

I felt like they finally did at least a little bit of work showing her true colors in the finale instead of forcing us to side with her. Tyrion made it a point to say how everyone reinforcing every decision she’s made just empowered her and fueled her narcissism. And then one of her last lines to Jon about how only she “knows good” and no one else gets to make decisions really summarized her whole personality.

Eh her jump to delusional psychopathic killer was still rushed and underdeveloped. Tyrion’s whole speech was trying to get us there by pure exposition and cherry picking specific events while ignoring everything that would allow Dany to rationalize (right or wrong) her previous murders (that article, although very good, did the same), and Dany’s story deserved better than that. The faults about white savior complex and the treatment of POC in the show are a fault of the show as a whole, but Dany specifically was for sure a huge part of it.

I like to root against this guy as a football player because of the championship belt thing he used to do and because it’s not right for one team to jump from one all time great QB to another, but it’s really hard not to like him

So I think that 3rd episode was my favorite this season. As much as people complained (like every episode after 2) I was enthralled throughout.

I’m enjoying the score too which dropped right after the finale. My favorite tracks so far are Believe, Master of War, The Long Night and For Cersei. I also like the choral pieces (Stay A Thousand Years, Not Today) which weren’t on the show.

Wow I disagree with pretty much all of this lol. It reminds me of english essays I wrote in undergrad where I would make big stretches to interpret things so that they fit within the theme of the paper while ignoring the super obvious parts that directly conflict with it

Just a few things that really stuck out:

•Dany’s entire first season, she was extremely passive. She essentially was a slave to be traded by Viserys to Drogo. This is the basis through which she gains genuine empathy for other enslaved people, and over the course of s1 she’s in a safe enough position to feel free to become more assertive, first to Drogo and then to others. This goes a long way in showing that no, actually, Dany *did* care about the most helpless people of the world, and she doesn’t betray that defining character trait until 805 when she does a complete heel turn. The writer consistently asserting that Dany doesn’t have actual empathy is directly contradicted by so many explicit scenes in the show. She gets so upset about one man’s child being killed by Drogon that she locks up her dragons indefinitely! She spends a whole season risking a slave master uprising against her because she doesn’t want slaves to die in a disgusting fighting pit! A despot would *never* do either of those things.

•Dany *did* free the slaves and it’s absolutely bizarre that the writer puts “freeing” in quotations, as if that wasn’t what she did in fact do? Every time she defeated a slave master, she made completely clear that nobody had to join her, but she plans to free all other slaves and asks people to come along. How absurd to say that she “used her ‘empathy’ and white saviorism to grow her following.” SHE FUCKING FREED SLAVES like holy shit. She put off traveling to Westeros when she realized that her freeing of the slaves was only temporary and things went right back to normal the second she would leave.

•The entire interpretation of Dany as a “colonizer” completely misinterprets what a colonizer fucking is lol. It just makes the most lazy, 101 reading of “white person + militarily conquering non-white areas = colonization.” If Dany already had power in Westeros, THEN expanded her power to other parts of the world, THEN used that power to extract wealth from them for the sake of enriching Westeros, *that* would be colonizing. Those places would be actual COLONIES. That is clearly not what happens in the series lol

•God they do the bullshit of acting like Dany is doing White Feminist moral superiority and the audience goes along with it when it’s depraved brown people but cheer on white girl Sansa for standing up to her. As if the slave masters and Sansa are at all on the same footing, both from the audience’s POV and from an objective standpoint. As if the slave masters weren’t SLAVE MASTERS and what they were doing wasn’t objectively wrong. I swear this writer would excuse real life indigenous human executions because “it’s not my place to judge”

•The paragraph comparing Dany and Cersei is just a big swing and a miss

•”Dany’s decision to burn King’s Landing is portrayed as a direct result of Jon Snow rejecting her advances after learning about their familial connection.” *Buzzer sound* Wrong.

•Saying the audience is sympathetic to the King’s Landing victims because they’re white and didn’t care about the other people Dany killed because they’re brown is just insultingly lazy, as if the contexts in which those things occurred aren’t completely different. As if the King’s Landing victims weren’t innocent civilians and the Slaver’s Bay victims weren’t, again, slave holders. A child could understand why one set of victims is worthy of sympathy while the other isn’t.

I know I'm very late on this but I am making my way through season 8 now and I have just finished the battle against the Night King ep.3 and holy christ what an episode. Even though I knew all the outcomes I was on the edge of my seat for 1 hour plus, just an incredible piece of television. The beginning of the battle where they are all just staring out into darkness was so tense and built such a sense of impending dread (reminded me of The Walking Dead episode with the build-up to Negan, which was incredible in its own right), then when they actually charged on the living like it was a wave of wights hitting them was brilliantly shot (how in the fuck would anyone on the front line survive?! As good a fighter as Brienne or Jamie or Grey Worm is, I don't think anyone makes it out of that?)

I just cannot believe that was a mid-season episode and not a finale in its own right. 6 Episode build-up to that battle - mid-season break - 6 episodes build up to the attack on Kings Landing would've been ideal for so many reasons.
