If we’re just talking great shows on HBO, besides the obvious The Sopranos and The Wire, Boardwalk Empire is fantastic (even though I’ve never finished it) as is The Leftovers. If you’re into lighter stuff, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Insecure both land in my favorite comedy shows of all time. Room 104 is also very underrated (not a comedy, hard to describe but surreal anthology show)
Oh yeah. That’s a two star if there ever was one. One for the acting and one for a lot of the cinematography. Otherwise bleeeeech.
In some great news: absolutely no leaks from tonight’s episode. No screenshots or anything. My hope has been restored by about 2%
I could rattle off ten must sees on HBO without blinking. I’m always rewatching something I feel like.
I’m so nervous. All I wanted was a screenshot or two to confirm or deny the worst leaks, now I’ll be on pins and needles!
I was ultimately disappointed in a lot of it but I definitely enjoyed it a whole lot more than you did. I certainly thought it was worthwhile. I think structuring it as a mystery and teasing the audience too much hurt it a lot for me. I know the mystery is never the entire point but it really was such a nothing that leaning into those aspects was a big mistake I think. I could rewatch Seasons 1 & 3 simply for the performances from McConnaughey & Harrelson and Ali & Dorff alone. (The only spelling on those last names I have confidence I didn't mangle is 'Ali'.)
They botched the end of TD season 1 which prevents me from ever watching it again even though I really enjoyed Matt and Woody in it
S3 also has some lines that are up there with bad poosey in terms of awfulness. And that’s not even getting into S2....... Did we recommend Six Feet Under yet? I feel like we must have. Look, basically you’re going to need to keep that subscription a little longer.
It’s interesting reading about the Aegonfort and how it morphed from a wooden hall into Kings Landing.
My brain is so fried right now I can t think of specifics, but you definitely can't go wrong keeping an HBO subscription if you're looking for quality programming.
Yeah, it’s definitely a desert island kind of channel. FX is probably the closest in terms of the amount of my favorite shows in every genre.
I feel like Justin Theroux's character in Wanderlust right now because I am so out of touch, all I can think of off the top of my head is Oz haha.
The Sopranos The Wire Deadwood Six Feet Under The Leftovers Boardwalk Empire Big Little Lies Sharp Objects Curb Your Enthusiasm The Comeback In Treatment Whoops that’s too many. And that’s just off the top of my head. There are tons more.
Wow - I really forgot Deadwood, Six Feet Under & Boardwalk Empire were all HBO. Even The Wire I forget sometimes where it aired originally.
There really are tons. I also need to watch stuff like Barry which I’m sure would end up on that list based on the hype I’ve heard. Don’t think I know much about Tyrant beyond the name. I appreciate that FX usually gives shows enough time to finish their stories, did that not happen for it?
All HBO has to do now is acquire the rights to World War Z and do it as a miniseries like Band of Brothers and it will officially cement itself as GOAT, I don’t care what comes after we’re all gone.
I have never read the book but from everything I have read or heard about it, THIS would be the way to do the story right. Would make for an incredible show too.
No, they only got 3 seasons and was getting no where in the ratings sadly. It wasn’t that great of a show or anything but I was invested in the story and wanted to know what was going to happen haha. The last ep of season 3 does work as an ending if need be but...there was more story there that they had set up for.
John from Cincinnati is really underrated. I think it’s a borderline top tier HBO show and it never gets talked about from what I see
