Exactly! That’s what I mean about the emperor’s new clothes and all that. It’s a perfect storm for people taking their anger out on a specific episode when it’s really the entire story that they’re actually frustrated with. What happened last week is no worse than the suicide mission, but that wasn’t the end of the NK so everyone gave it more of a pass.
I don’t think I trust GRRM to finish this story satisfyingly either Not that I trust he’ll finish at all
In some peoples eyes the last good book was ASOS which came out 18 years ago. I’m not in that group though I think it would have been way better to combine the last two. It’s definitely not a given that the books end well.
I think AFFC gets a bad rap from original readers because it was the first book in 5 years and it introduced a whole bunch of a new characters and didn’t have a lot of fan favorites. Since I didn’t start reading until the show and thus could “binge” them, I really didn’t find AFFC all that bad.
ADWD is definitely #2. AFFC is definitely #5. AFFC is a slog at times, that's all. The events of that book are still good and I wish we got it in the show.
I really need to try the books one of these days. I actually own them (except maybe the newest one?), but I always feel like I need to commit to reading them all at once so I don’t forget things and that’s so daunting. I see the little box set staring at me and then end up reading something else every time.
I read the first one like 3-4 years ago. Started the second then put it down for a year. Still trying to work my way through it
Ha, that’s my exact fear. I don’t think knowledge of the show would even really help bridge any gap there.
I was literally going to edit my post to mention Davos as being a huge reason I still really want to try. I need mooooorrreeeee.
One of the most memorable chapters for me was the one immediately after Blackwater before he's rescued. No way they could've possibly do that in the show since it was all internal but it's so good.
Blackwater was probably my favorite episode until I got to Kissed by Fire. Davos just came out of nowhere and made me fall in love with him. That may still be my favorite battle episode. I’m sure it would break my heart to read his internal struggle after that.
I completely agree. Which is hilarious because he's probably the most far off from the books, casting wise.
Liam Cunningham is also just spectacular. Wind That Shakes the Barley and his scene in Hunger are both terrific.
Yeah I’d say it’s prob the worst of the 5 but I still enjoyed it a lot and don’t think it’s that far begins the others like a lot of other fans act like it is. I honestly thought Dance was more of a slog. I feel like the Meereen chapters especially would just kinda go on forever sometimes. It was 3-4 years ago but I feel like I got through Feast pretty quickly.
Lol yeah I feel like he’s way more gruff and pirate-y in the book. But I may be letting Roy Dotrice’s audiobook version color my perspective there. Btw, the unabridged audiobooks with Roy Dotrice are fucking brilliant and if you wanna read the books but take the easy way out and cheat, those are a good way to go. Really a bummer he died before he could finish off the series. Not sure who they’ll get that will be anywhere close to as good. Harry Lloyd did a good job with the Knight of the Seven Kingdoms book but he doesn’t do the voices like Roy did.
Yeah I think middle age is way aged down in the books just like everyone else. I’m pretty sure Ned is like 35 but is described like Sean Bean’s definitely pushing 50 Ned Stark lol
Don’t make me get negative in this thread again! I said what I said. (Tommen is very useful but beard stroking joy is TOO PURE.)
All of those felt very necessary. Davos being older was a genius change by the showrunners. Similar to Charlie from LOST.
