The point of my initial statement is, how could it have been done better? More lighting in a blizzard at night? OK, I accept that. But don't call a show bad or terrible when you aren't even really giving it the time of day or even care that much for the show.

I think that's probably the only thing not explicitly explained about the White Walkers that I would have liked to have known: Why do they bother to create those patterns after killing?

 

Well I mean I can certainly retcon it to that...

 

I'm just saying usually when pasty soulless wights kill people off their land, steal it, and take the absorb the indigenous population into its social hegemony there is some kinda more complex ideological motive.

Yeah, probably another one of the things about them that's just probably better if you don't overthink it. The Night's Watch said it was a "warning" or something so maybe they literally just want to scare people. I don't know. Same thing with leaving certain survivors like Samwell or the guy from the very first episode. Probably just intimidation?

The symbols strike me as just being a snarky thing from them. They adopted the pattern from the Children of the Forest and made it their own (I guess like an upside-down cross being anti-Christian).

Haha I don't disagree, it's like you said - sometimes they are human-ish, sometimes they are just demons. You can't really think about it too heavily. Not giving that as an excuse, I just mean it's not worth the effort.

 

I still very much enjoyed the episode, I just think in the context of the show and especially compared to other epic nighttime battles on film/tv it was pretty subpar.

The Battle of Helm's Deep for instance had similar stakes and setting yet it was much more well-directed, entertaining, and coherent.

 

I couldn’t agree more. I like passing time by arguing and going over theories and stuff, but I’ve said before that turning my brain off is how I’ve gotten through it to this point. It’s only when talking about meta issues like the misogyny or racism that I really care tremendously. Everything else is just fun fluff to go over and pick apart.

 

I liked this episode a lot. I liked it even more watching it a second time. I get some of the complaints though that people have had about it.

 

Wasn’t the Night King in the first scene of the whole series? And we’ve been given tidbits and teases about him and Bran and 3ER for nearly a decade now? I’m not saying it ruined the show or anything, but IF there’s not much more to him or their storyline, that has to be a valid complaint, no?

 

Saying its disappointing compared to Helms Deep is like saying Drew Brees is disappointing compared to Tom Brady.

 

Night King wasnt introduced until season 4

 

Not the night king, just wights and a white walker I think.

 

And we didn't get his backstory/motivation until season 5

 

Okay, that clarifies it a bit but them as a mystical threat and all the other Bran stuff has been there since the beginning.

 

To be fair, the showrunners were kind of begging for the comparison with the way they specifically hyped it up.
