  1. That's a part of what I meant by more people should've died - not just that such a big event feels like it should've happened, but also that it felt like every shot before a cut to a different character heavily implied they were fucked (everyone on the frontline being just smothered by that initial wave of wights, Jon fighting off like 1,000 of them by himself after the NK raised them).

Well when you put it like that you make it sound like they did a lot.

I suppose I wasn't giving them enough credit because I was expecting them to do more in this last season.

These three episodes should have closed out last season, and last season should have spent more time on the Walkers themselves. The Long Night could've been the season finale. And then this could have been a shortened season of six regular-length episodes dealing with the resolution to the actual Game of Thrones. I think more people would have been satisfied with that. It would've let last season have more time to breathe and this season wouldn't have felt as rushed, with the Night King being dispatched in the middle of the season where it doesn't feel as special as it should for a lot of people.

That first time Brienne got knocked down and swarmed in the initial charge where Jamie sees it happen *almost* played out like in Justice League when you can tell a scene is a total bastardization between shit Zack Snyder was doing and shit Joss Whedon completely changed but some footage from before is still left in. It looked and sounded as if she were DEAD AF right there, but then she's back up and at 'em right after.

Except for a few moments towards the beginning, the overall direction/editing of this episode was pretty bad.

I agree that this would have been so much better structurally.

I'd set my spin-off a few hundred years in the future, during the Victorian-equivalent period of Westerosi history. Steampunk & dragons bb let's f***ing go.

Is Bran the only reason why they were able to find the previous 3ER at all? Because that really does make him even worse than just getting the COTF killed and poor Hodor gone. Did the NK actually have a plan before Bran went rogue and gave him the GPS? Would he have gone against all of humanity first and then found Max in the tree?

They did a ton of damage in the battle itself, but it is pretty comical that they planned this for thousands and thousands of years and they all died immediately after meeting the first large group of humans beyond the wall. Like their goal was to destroy every living thing and they just oopsied it all away at the first test, and that’s hysterical.

The Walkers knew where the Three-Eyed Raven was, they just couldn't touch him because he was protected by the Children's magic. When the Night King marked Bran, the protection was broken and they were able to enter the tree.

hopefully someone picked up jorah's (sam's) sword after he died. ironic how the woman who killed sam's family was defended and ultimately saved by sam's family sword. when dany goes low, tarlys go high

Mallory Rubin made a good point: Perhaps they didn't want to reveal or be too explicit about the Night King/White Walkers because of this Long Night spinoff they're doing. If you reveal everything now, what do you have left to make that show intriguing?

Holding back from your narrative solely for a spin-off is one of the worst trends in pop culture.

I would love to know what their intention was had that not happened. Just continue to wait it out being creepy?

This wouldn’t surprise me at all and it’s a crock of shit if it’s true.

I assume they would have figured some other way around it eventually. I mean, how were they planning on dealing with the Wall before Daenerys brought them a dragon to use? We don't really need to know what else they would have done because they didn't have to figure out another way.

Oh I know, but it makes it even funnier that they had so long to plan and so much handed to them to where it almost seemed like THEY were the ones with destiny on their side and now the entire army is just Everybody’s Dead Dave.

I personally don't think they held back. The Night King is a pretty simplistic character with simplistic motivations, which is why I'm somewhat intrigued/confused at the decision to do a Long Night sequel in the first place. But the one thing I felt was sort of missing from this last episode is a moment between the Night King and Bran where we get the vision flashes that sort of sum up everything to get to this point. Maybe would have been more interesting if that sort of vision flash could hold clues for what we'll get with this prequel, but they're probably not at that stage with the project to pull it off.

I don't know that they really had a "plan." As far as I'm concerned, the jury's still out on how much of what they were doing was intelligence and how much of it was just programming. They were created to fight the First Men and they clearly took that directive to the extreme (almost like an AI gone wrong). But at the same time they were able to adapt to changing developments like the dragon thing. It's an open question to me.

The biggest point of confusion for me since Sunday night has been everyone that's disappointed that we "didn't learn about the Night King" or that the Night King/Walkers weren't explained or developed enough. We literally got all of that knowledge and backstory back in season 5. The last piece of information we learned came this season when Bran revealed that they wanted to kill him in order to wipe out human history as well. The Night King was just some guy that got experimented on by the Children, there's nothing deeper there and there never was. All that anticipation for a big reveal was the result of fan theories run amok, nothing more.

There can't be any backstory left for the spinoff because we got all of his backstory four years ago or whenever it was.

I was just referring to the idea put forth about the spinoff itself. Within the show I guess it’s up to opinion if anything about the NK or WW was handled in a satisfying way, but excusing leaving out backstory or motivation because of a separate show? Hard pass.

I know we talked about this like two weeks ago, but the decisions to make them go out of their way to send intricate messages that seem to be motivated by anger or interest in striking fear or blasphemy (or emotional reaction in general) and having weird moments like this episode where he shows specific human reactions and emotions is where the “they’re literally just destruction machine killbots” gets really muddled. It’s kind of in a weird limbo between interpretations that drags it down.

L.O.L. Says who? you? I would love to see anyone put together, what would have to be, literally the longest and biggest cinematic battle in history and have it be nearly half as gripping or entertaining. Love blanket statements like this, no context or explanation just a brash opinion.
