I already feel terrible for these characters, but I just keep thinking about the millions of people still left in the world who will probably never know that these guys saved their lives. And they’ll all probably end up fighting against them.

Fucking AMEN. Jorah's entire purpose, from the pilot to the moment he died, was to protect Dany. He's absolutely a major character.

Theon went from being a pompous teenager to a tryhard edgy Ironborn to being tortured to a fragile PTSD-ridden mess to a man born again. Alfie should get an Emmy for how many times he had to completely repurpose his role.

Yeah exactly. One thing I was thinking they could do at first is use the story of this victory to rally people to their cause against Cersei, but then I realized that literally nobody in the South is going to believe any of this happened.

Or have them eat a bunch of dragon glass and melt it down to shoot with their fire. They need us on the writing team

What about dragonglass catapult balls that shatter when they land and scatter shards all over the nearby wights that avoided the initial impact

Can Daenerys legitimize Gendry since he's the last Baratheon? I wonder if that would rally some houses to her side.

Wouldn’t legitimizing him be equivalent to giving up the throne for herself? I guess she could marry him, but she’s def more ambitious than that.

I keep forgetting next week's episode is basically the same length. I'm assuming the first half will be the aftermath of the battle (survivor reunions, funeral proceedings, etc) and the second half will be setting up the battle for King's Landing

I definitely think E5 will be the real climax of the show and 6 will be more of an epilogue

Why don’t they just make the whole plane out of the dragonglass

The king/queen can legitimize bastards. If he pledged loyalty to her it would be smart to do it but the challenge would be convincing the Stormlands bannermen to believe that he’s really Robert’s son.

I was also kind of surprised to see the wights walking around aimlessly in the library. Before, they always seemed to have a goal in mind, a command, or something that gave them purpose. I don’t know.

I saw this pointed out on Twitter right after the episode. Plenty of other characters have pulled off the whole "I've been evil this whole time but will redeem myself right at the end" sort of thing. But Theon made us go from rooting for him, to hating him, to feeling sorry for him, to rooting for him again, to feeling sorry for him again, to cheering him on through his final redemption. He had to convincingly play that character at so many different phases.

That's what I've been feeling as well. After they deal with the Winterfell aftermath, they'll probably address Jon's parentage again and start getting a plan for how to deal with Cersei in EP 5. I wouldn't doubt it if at least Cersei makes it through the battle and then they have to decide how to deal with her in the finale.

I did a rewatch, and I still think the strategies they used in the battle were questionable at best and completely preposterous at worst. With the episode itself however, I think most of my complaints came down to how much they probably trimmed the whole episode down while they were editing it.

It seemed a little bit strange and at odds with yourself to on one hand be bragging about shooting 'the longest battle scene in film or TV history' and on the other to say that battle scenes get very repetitive and boring and that you were looking for ways to trim yours down wherever you could. I think the stuff with like Brienne for example where she seemed completely overwhelmed and about to be killed on the ground, but then the next time you see her she's popped back up on her feet doing fine fighting somewhere else were a result of this.

Either that, or those were intentional fakeouts to fuck with the audience because we were all expecting her to die. If that's the case that is just dumb and was a very poor decision. I don't think that's the case though.

I agree with what they said to a point - I think *most* battle scenes get tiresome and repetitive quickly because they aren't done very well, just crazy shaky came and insanely fast editing. I think a battle scene done well can go on for quite a while before it becomes boring.

I think they did a good job with this episode of laying out the geography of the battle for the viewer so that when the shit did hit the fan and it became kinda tough to see what was happening you already had a good idea of where people were at and basically what they were gonna be attempting to do.

I still have no idea whether The Dothraki were supposed to charge like that as part of the strategy or if they just got excited because the sexy wizard lit their swords on fire though...

I'm not going to lie, Theon had one of the more successful redemption arcs I think I've ever seen.

Although I agreed with some of this thread's earlier comments that the White Walkers were not needed for this battle (and it was strategically smart for them not to get in the mix), I did feel like their involvement would help mix up the battle scenes just like at Hardhome. They also didn't really utilize any animals, giants, etc. besides the one dragon and one giant.

If anything, having to battle the actual soldiers with Valyrian steel swords could have given some of the main characters more variety in what they were doing. Instead, most of the characters (Jaime, Brienne, etc.) would just sit back killing countless wights, appear to get overwhelmed, and then reappear fine again minutes later....somehow surviving while all of their comrades didn't.

Again, totally not necessary, but I'm more surprised that they didn't utilize more of this stuff if they were worried about repetitiveness. Regardless, I do think it would have been cool to see Jaime or Brienne take down a White Walker or Jorah battle one to save Dany.

One of the big reasons I was so surprised that they finished off the Night King at this point was because the White Walkers are ultimately so much of a big nothing. They did not do very much at all.

They turned a dragon, took down the Wall, decimated everything north of Winterfell, destroyed Daenerys' army, sacked Winterfell, and nearly succeeded in killing the last Three-Eyed Raven. Not to mention they essentially wiped out the entire Wildling population aside from what few of them made it through the Wall with Jon.
