Game of Thrones (HBO) TV Show • Page 429

  1. Are we done bitching about lighting yet?

I stopped reading around pg 412 because we literally had 2/3 of all the posts on every page from like 390-412 all about the episodes being dark. Good lord that was exhausting.

Anyway, I've skipped way ahead in this thread so I apologize if I'm rehashing anything already discussed.

    1) This episode made me very curious about the future of Varys. Mel told him he'd die in Westeros and I fully expected it to come in this episode. Since he didn't, does he have a more meaningful death coming later? I feel he's barely been involved as of late.

    2) Everything involving Mel in this episode was great, as I was hoping she'd be back before the battle. Lighting the Dothraki swords got me so pumped, and then lighting the trenches, seeing her faith start to waiver but her still not giving up... I loved it. We've seen her do some awful things in this show, but her redemption was really well executed. Her short discussing with Davos was very well done. And then her ending was perfect. She's served her purpose, and it was her time to go. I can't think of a better ending for her story.

    3) I'm still screaming about Arya killing the NK. Our house went into pure chaos when that happened. My fiancee and I both screamed OH FUCK at the top of our lungs, followed by us actually pausing the show, running around the house screaming, waking up our German Shepherd (named Arya) and giving her rubs, treats, and telling her what a good girl she is, screaming some more, running around some more, and then finally about 15 minutes later we unpaused and finished the episode. It was amazing.

    4) The Dothraki attack scene was so disheartening. It gave me one of the most dreadful feelings I've ever had in this show. What a well done scene. The look on Jaime's face watching it happen, after he'd just been raving about them being the best fighters he's ever seen a few episodes back, shook me. It also sucked watching the Unsullied just get obliterated. But... its what I fully expected to happen. Its been obvious for awhile that Dany wasnt going to be taking the 7K with the Dothraki and Unsullied. Too much attention was paid to her "army of savages" by the white folks of Westeros. Now, I think her or Jon, or her and Jon, or whatever, will be able to rally an army of the people against Cersei. And we'll get this beautiful reversal where Cersei is defending her throne with a foreign force against her own people.

Beyond that, my mind is still too fucked to talk about much more. I'm about to start a rewatch of the episode and plan to be back to talk more afterwards.

Is he also the least charismatic man in the world in the books?

No, he’s actually both way more likeable and also way more an asshole in the books. He’s a lot smarter and more cunning (and more of a tactician than a swordsman) in the books and they cut out most of his more morally dubious actions and totally change the buildup to his death to make him more sympathetic

Carpet elf is right, it would be a little bit jarring to see the hero doing some of the things on screen he does in the book. Still think they fucked him up tho

I'm gonna have to re-read Dance because I really don't remember Jon being that grey. You guys pointed out baby swap to me earlier in the thread but I don't even remember that being some terrible thing. He was basically trying to protect a baby.

IDK....I feel like, much like the show, a lot of the actions he took could be morally supported pretty easily, even if in that world they were pretty bad (i.e. betraying the Night's Watch to bring in wildlings, etc)

Also I'm now doing research and realizing that Maege is in fact Lyanna's mom, so Jorah truly is her cousin. Dacey was Maege's oldest daughter.

Lyanna is the youngest though so in show world, she was definitely the last Mormont. (In book world, Maege is not in attendance at the Red Wedding because she was given a special mission by Robb before it happened, so she is presumably still alive but Lyanna is the Lady on Bear Island still in Dance because she replies to Stannis' request for loyalty)

Was bringing Jon Snow back from the dead just a show thing because he's so popular and well liked? Did they kill him off following the books but then bring him back when they decided they had to go off on their own with the writing?

Jon's story in the books has ended at Season 5 Episode 10 as of right now. I think most people just assume he's coming back because they've all figured out he's truly a main character at this point.

I think Lady Mel is currently at Castle Black when it happens in the books but I can't remember.

They also change who deals the killing blow and it's so much god damn harder to take. Fuck Ollie, that kid was always a shit.

Just watched the episode. Not sure if I like that the Night King is already dead. It was cool that Arya killed him, though.

You mean in the show? YEah that was rough.

In the books I don't even think they tell you the names of the people who stab him besides Alliser, right?

I know that builder guy was one of them in the books but I could've sworn Edd was the one to do it in the books.

Bowen Marsh is the leader of the group actually
It’s implied that he wargs into ghost so doesn’t really “die”
The baby swap is a big one, his sendoff of Sam is a lot less genial in the books than the show, and he doesn’t get killed for letting the wildlings through, but for compromising the neutrality of the watch by effectively siding with Stannis, sending Mance Rayder to winterfell, and intending to ride to battle with Ramsey after getting the pink letter
I don’t remember this one tbh

True, he was getting involved in the politics of Westeros....though if he did that in the show, do you think that would have made him seen as a lot less hero-y to the average watchers? I don’t think they would have cared that much honestly.
