Also everyone talking about powering through the books or skipping parts or dreading rereading sounds exactly like me trying to start the series this time. Lol. I’m super grateful to whoever it was that recommended that 30 minute S1 recap, otherwise I don’t know if I could have made it.

I wonder if he ever regrets letting them make the TV show? I mean, he's gained considerably more wealth and fame as a result, but trying to tie up his story after the show has done so could be a huge headache. Will any of those book characters deemed superfluous enough to be left out of the show entirely factor into the end of the books at all? Will he feel pressure to change things up so that people who've watched the show won't necessarily know what's coming in the books? Will some people opt not to bother reading the last two books because they've seen the show? I'm sure the books will one day be finished, but I could see someone else doing it after he dies, a la The Wheel of Time.

Same here. Part of me thinks he'll just end up either dead, or a fraud, but I'll admit that's somewhat colored by his exclusion from the show.

I got about 25% through the third book and called it quits. These are dense books as it is, but once you already know what's going to happen it makes reading the books pretty superfluous. Maybe if GRRM deviates wildly from the show with the last 2 books I'll dive back into them.

Just by virtue of some of the plotlines that were dropped or severely altered for the show, there are going to be a lot of differences. Maybe not where the story ultimately ends but the road to get there will not be the same by any means.

I loved the books, I def skimmed descriptions of feasts and outfits though.

I’ve been reading the 3rd book for years now. I can only seem to want to read them when I’m rewatching the show. But hey, I’ve got plenty of time to finish before any potential new books come out.

I've forgotten so many book storylines or conflated them with stuff that is show only that I'll probably have to re-read the series before TWOW, if it ever comes out

I’ve re-read the first book....can’t remember if I’ve re read the second or nit

Towerofthehand has great chapter recaps, but last i checked they only had a few of the ADWD chapters done

these recaps were great for when I put down AFFC for like 6 months

When I first read the 3rd book I skipped a bunch of chapters because I didn’t wanna get ahead of the show. I eventually went back and read them when it was clear different stories had been scrapped

How do the books roughly translate to the seasons? Like does the best book cover the best parts of the show or do they have totally different strengths?

Book 3 (A Storm Of Swords) is usually considered the best book i think, and that encompassed seasons 3 and 4 which I think are the best two. They pull some things from book 4AFFC too, IIRC.

Season 1 is pretty close to book 1...it’s probably the most true to the books that the show was.

After season 4 things start to diverge from the books more. Season 5 has a lot of book 4 and 5, which a lot of people consider book 4 the weakest because it focuses on characters people generally don’t give a shit about (ironborn). I do think there was much book stuff left by the time Season 6 starts

That whole battle would've been over in 5 minutes if Ray Peterson and Lt. Mark Rumsfield was there:

The first two seasons are extremely true to the first two books. Book 3 is the longest and was split mostly between seasons 3 and 4. Season 4 has elements of book 4 too, and season 5 has parts of books 4 and 5 but a lot of it is its own stuff too, and nothing since has appeared in the books yet

Imo season 3 is the best part of the show, and book 3 is the highlight for me, so I would say they’ve got similar strengths

It's probably 3-5-2-1-4 for me in terms of ranking the books.

Ok cool. 3 was hands down my favorite season so it’s nice that those line up.

Really like anybody else. Just suggest putting guys behind the trench and not running your cavalry directly at them to start the battle.

I didn't feel emotional about this episode at all. The one before it made me get a lump in my throat way, way more.
