Season 5 is so fucking bad lol. Like half of the plots are just filling time for the other plots to get where they need to be for s6.

Hardhome is a treasure tho, as is Arya taking down one of the worst characters

I’ve been watching GoT for the first time and yeah, season 5 isn’t great but those last 3 episodes were excellent

Agreed. I think it's less out of place in this world like Sophie said afterwards, but even that is still a step up from some of the other rape scenes in show which seem to be mostly for shock value only.

I think they were painted into a bit of a corner with how awful of a human being Ramsey is, there was no way he was not gonna do it, but it would have been easier to just imply it instead of lingering on Theon and showing us the beforehand and etc. Everyone could have put 2 and 2 together without all that extra stuff. Just show us Sansa being taken into the bedroom, Theon going to leave and Ramsay saying "No reek, stay." and then Reek closes the door on the camera and looks all sad as he does it.

At least they didn't go the route of the books with that one. But it's also not Sansa in the books its Farya so it was made worse that way. I don't think Sansa has that fate coming to her in the books, but I truly have no idea where her story is going in the books at this point.

Aw man I forgot that happens in Season 5 with Arya. That was such an underrated satisfying death.

So uh, yeah. I didn’t expect it to be so unfathomably terrible, and yet here we are. It’s like every single bad and problematic and cliche choice they’ve ever made came together into one shining example of why this show deserves practically none of the acclaim it receives.

At this point I’m going full sunk cost fallacy to finish since I’ve come so far, but yikes is it awful.

But yeah once you get past that episode in season 5 you are over the hump. The last 3 episodes especially are extremely good/satisfying for the most part.

Only thing worse than rape for character development is rape for someone else's character development.

If only there was a source they could've consulted to not fuck things up like that.

It’s such a perfect distillation of how misogynistic this show is and always has been. When you have source material that gives you an out not to be endlessly cruel for no reason and time and time again you throw that stuff in, you’re making a very specific point.

TBF, I remember thinking at the time how messed up it was they used that for Theon's growth and made it all about him and not her experience, but I do think in hindsight that her growth from there was pretty stark (*rimshot*). She became much more forceful and outspoken and didn't really take shit from anyone after that. Her season 6 arc, minus the weird decisions of not communicating with Jon, is pretty badass. Outside of Theon making the choice to help her and run away, I don't think his character really grew much because of that scene. And Sansa pretty much had to berate him into helping her.

IDK I think for that scene in particular the source material is much worse.
Me reading that scene in the books:

But if you mean just followign the source and never putting Sansa in that place in the first place, than :100:

It's also impressive because what happens in the books is actually worse but Martin has the sense to realize readers can put two and two together so nothing is actually described. Whereas D&D consistently assume the viewers are stupid.

    What happened specifically?

Aaaaaand now we have Gilly being terrorized in literally the next episode. Has anyone written an article with exactly how many rapes/attempted rapes/threats of rape are in this whole series? It has to be a mind-boggling number.

WAIT OH MY GOD they followed the attack with Gilly and Sam having sex??? Y’all.

The book version is basically the same except it's Jeyne Poole (I think?) and uhhh Ramsey....has Theon...involved.

It's one of, if not the best of its genre. Though that speaks more to the lack of series in this genre.

Honestly wouldn't be surprised at all if every single spinoff is better.

The production quality is unprecedented and probably won’t be topped any time soon. Like I can’t fathom trying to juggle all that has gone in to making it.

But even at its best moments it doesn’t come close to the best tv shows. The most memorable parts are, in the end, usually just shocking twists or deaths
