Aww, now they’re trying to butter me up with my favorite reading lesson duo. But I’m still mad.

No, it was a rape scene.

TBF, in the books it's not really rape. She starts out saying 'not here' but as they make out and stuff she starts....actually it's probably some of the grossest dirty talk in the books (it's brother and sister after all) and I was a little bit scarred for life listening to it on audio book this past summer lol...they didn't do the best job conveying it in the tv show though.

They kind of reverse the rolls a little later on in the show, not much of a spoiler, but the scene is at least a tiny bit less cringy in that context

There’s not any context that would make that scene ok. Especially since they are playing up Jaime’s redemption so hard. And certainly not if she does something similar later, although I don’t know if that’s what you’re saying happens.

I know the scene was different in the books, which is a huge part of why I loathe what the show team decided to portray there. No amount of Shireen and Davos being cute will make up for the major, major issues of misogyny and representation (and awful sexposition since that was mentioned) that they constantly bring out. It’s endlessly infuriating. And I haven’t even gotten to the part with Ramsay yet!

    The Ramsay part is rooooough.

Yeah they were doing a really good job with Jaime's redemption as a character and that scene was just very poorly written/directed to the point where you couldn't tell it's not supposed to be a rape. I'd blame the director but all of his other credits on the show are pretty superb episodes more or less. But it says a lot that he didn't work on the show after that season, I imagine the reaction to that scene is part of why.

She doesn't rape Jaime later but they do a MUCH better job actually showing you it's not rape this time.

  8. You don't get to say it wasn't supposed to be that. That's how they filmed it, that's how they edited it, that's how they wrote it. The people in charge deliberately changed it to that from the source material, because they are hacks.

Thank you I was having a hard time figuring out how to articulate that. It’s specifically and explicitly a rape scene and there’s no justification for it.

It's been a while since i've watched that scene, but IIRC Cersei goes from trying to push him off to grabbing his face and pulling him closer even as she's saying "not here"...but you literally have to be looking for it and notice what her hands are doing for like .5 seconds of one part of the scene, it's just terrible execution all around and literally all the writers had to do was add some of the dialogue from the book back into the scene to fix it and have it not be as bad as it was. I wouldn't call them "hacks" but D&D certainly deserve all of the shade for that scene and the decisions there. Like you said, they had all the opportunity to edit it differently and write it differently and film it differently and just....didn't. And I don't understand why, because it takes away from everything you're trying to do with Jaime's character when you film it that way.

Now that I think about it...I think they actually did a worse job handling Dany/Drogo in S1 after the wedding. They deliberately kept out literally two words, one from each character, that would have made their wedding night uhhh not a rape.

Missandei teaching Grey Worm to read is great, this show should just be Hooked on Westerosi Phonics.

Dany’s story is the worst though and I hate it with a passion. I am going to end up actively disliking every mainstream fan favorite I think, blah.

It’s the white savior plot to end all white savior plots, and there’s no sense of irony or understanding that this isn’t just correct and just and the best thing to ever happen. Also she can’t act (or they can’t direct her) unless it’s a huge screaming dragon scene. The quiet moments are all bizarre and don’t have the emotional weight they should.

Hmm that's an interesting take I haven't heard before. I don't get the same from her story line but to each their own as always.

I think the middle seasons kind of meander a bit with her, but the first 2 seasons set her up for a great retribution story with her family history and her being abused/sold by her brother. I think she learned from Drogo, and then was led by Jorah who thought her to be dead when she stepped into the flames. Her coming out unscathed put her on that pedestal and she garnered followers without even intending to be alive. From there I think the story did itself well to show her learning her strengths and not being allowed to be manipulated by many that try to do so on her path to Westeros. By season 6, she was a totally different character to me.

Yeah, the fact that she started out well makes this turn even more disappointing. I’ve read that the books are more explicitly anti war and anti imperialism/colonialism, so the show acting like we have true good guys to root for and who we want to “win” undermines a lot of that message.

Also all the plot armor is a bummer. Going from Ned to the Red Wedding and now Tyrion is on trial for death, but this time I know not to actually worry about him. It would have been really cool for them to continue being willing to kill people for the sake of the story instead of wanting to keep big moneymaking characters around.

It will be fun to see if the ending frees them up to do some real shocks or if they keep it safe for such a big audience.

Also I reaaaaaaalllllly wish Shae had a better actress because wow does she bring everything in her story down. Her loss and betrayal and testimony should have been gut wrenching but instead it was just awful to watch. Tyrion and Tywin at the end was good though.

Yeah Shae's acting is a huge bummer throughout the series

She basically spends two full seasons talking about how Tyrion won't openly be with her and it comes off so whiney
