The Spoils of War is far and away the highlight of this season for me.

I think they made benjen coldhands because they changed 3ER from being Brynden Rivers to just a guy, meaning it wouldn't make sense for Brynden's sidekick to be coldhands
I assume it's for his Fire and blood book

For some reason I thought they either mentioned his name was Brynden or at least used the "Thousand eyes and one line" when Bran first met him at the end of Season 4.

AS for Fire And Blood, he's said a couple times that the first volume is pretty much done, so I'm hoping against hope that all these meetings with this editor and publisher are dropping off chunks of TWOW to be edited haha. HE did also say he expects Fire and Blood to be out in late 2018 or early 2019, while also saying it's possible we get two books from him in 2018 from AWOIAF...which makes me think he's closer to being done than he lets on with TWOW.

I don't recall him ever being referred to as Brynden rivers. I could be wrong, tho

I've given up hope of ever seeing twow

Do you watch murder mysteries and then hope to see it from the killer's perspective? Robert's Rebellion makes zero sense as an adaptation.

Well I mean, with that story you would also get to see all the Rhaegar stuff, Mad King's rule and Jamie killing him right? All stuff I think fans would be down to see, but I think since the outcome is already known it may not have the effect you think it would when it plays out.

We spent three seasons hating Jaime along with the rest of the kingdom for killing the Mad King. It dulls and cheapens the blow. Because a LOT of Robert's Rebellion is cut and dry and simple. The brilliance behind all of that is the ambiguity and how we change our opinions and views after the fact. Jaime was a Kingslayer and an asshole until we learned why he did it. Robert was a hero who saved the country from a wicked family until we learned he was nothing more than a jealous drunk. I mean shit, the Mad King may actually be a victim if this Bran thing holds any weight.

Robert's Rebellion is one of the central events of the show so I get that it instantly comes to mind for a spin-off, I just think why that story is so compelling is how it has been told after the fact.

Yeah I think that's an inherent problem for spin offs with shows like this. Like you said, lot of the suspense comes from the mystery and slowly finding out what actually happened in the past or how your opinion of characters changes. I think it's smarter to either go waaay back or just explore new characters altogether.

The Telltale game did a very good job of telling an engrossing and interesting Game of Thrones story, albeit running concurrently with the aired narrative and with characters from the main narrative. Westeros and Essos are big places with a lot of people and history. You can tell a lot of stories within it. I'd love to see more from the common people, people who aren't fighting over thrones and titles, but I also can't lie: I'd be pretty amped for a dramatization of the tourney at Harrenhal.

You also have the problem of casting. How do you do Barristan or Jaime?

We know a lot about and have seen so many characters from the houses Stark and Lannister. I know a Robert's Rebellion prequel isn't really necessary but I think I'd enjoy seeing some form of prequel series centered around Rhaegar Targaryen. It doesn't even have to be high stakes, I think I'd just enjoy seeing such a prominent and important character on the series more fully dramatized. Ned Stark weighs so heavily on the series, largely through seeing him in action and Sean Bean's performance, so I think something about Rhaegar could enhance the primary series in a similar way.

I'd watch a Queen of Thorns coming of age prequel miniseries. But otherwise, I want Essos stories the more I think about prequels. Doom of Valyria. Jaqen's backstory. A cool Iron Bank heist plot.

How about a 12-part mini series. The entire thing is just The Hound and Tormund talking about life and the whole thing takes place on that mound from last week's episode.
