Today was really fun and I'm glad I went! Highlights were Bane (Can We Start Again was SICK), the end of Armor for Sleep, Mae, and Better Lovers. This weekend was awesome and I've never felt more compelled to return to a festival the following year. Birmingham, itself, was great, the crowds were great, the weather was ideal all things considered, the staff was friendly, zero complaints. I ended up going back to the FF merch and snagged the last copy of that coffee table book for $15.
Yeah I have zero complaints, everything seemed to go really smooth. Not sure if I've mentioned it before or not, but I got married at Sloss, right under the water tower, so it's always a cool feeling to come back in any capacity. I did realize it's harder to meet up with people than I thought it would be, haha.
Would love to know how much money Scogin ends up turning down to do The Chariot and OG Norma Jean sets next year
This Callous Daoboys/Zao collab was one of my favorite collabs I saw all weekend. A truly full circle musical moment for me.
A LOT of stuff turning 20 next year that would make sense for the fest Underoath - They're Only Chasing Safety Converge - You Fail Me Fear Before The March of Flames - Art Damage The Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine Killswitch Engage - The End of Heartache Atreyu - The Curse (assuming Alex would ever play with them again) Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake (Probably too big but would be dope) Unearth - The Oncoming Storm All That Remains - This Darkened Heart The Acacia Strain - 3750 He Is Legend - I Am Hollywood Senses Fail - Let It Enfold You From First To Last - Dear Diary My Teen Angst Has A Body Count Eighteen Visions - Obsession Misery Signals - Of Malice and the Magnum Heart Shadows Fall - The War Within Demon Hunter - Summer of Darkness Zao - The Funeral of God 100 Demons - 100 Demons Mortal Treason - A Call To The Martyrs Terror - One With The Underdogs Taking Back Sunday - Where You Want To Be Jimmy Eat World - Futures Hawthorne Heights - The Silence In Black And White Emery - The Weak's End The Used - In Love And Death mewithoutYou - Catch Us For The Foxes Alexisonfire - Watch Out!
Highlighted ones I would love, but let me just say if they can get KsE with Howard I will lose my mind. Would be so cool.
The organizers have said they have asked fear before every year and upped their offers each year and they aren’t really interested. This is Hell has been teasing wanting to do some stuff next year so you gotta assume they would play. I assume if the Blacklisted reunion shows go ok at the end of October they play.
Bands who have played before I'd like to see again next year... Emery, END, Zao, Anberlin, He Is Legend, Touche Amore, Turnstile, Killswitch, Knocked Loose, Movements, Norma Jean, Manchester Orchestra, Maylene, Mastodon, Spiritbox, Mindforce, Callous Daoboys New bands... Coheed, Greyhaven, The Fall of Troy (Doppelganger), TDWP, The Wonder Years, Joyce Manor, Turnover, L.S. Dunes (Coheed and Circa, why not?) , TWIABP, Tigers Jaw, Foxing, Gojira, Code Orange, Loathe (saw a lot of Loathe shirts this weekend), Copeland, Menzingers, Periphery (maybe too outside of scope? Always one or two prog-adjacent metal bands and they're heavy enough to fit the bill), PUP, Balance and Composure, Pianos Become the Teeth, Gaslight Anthem, August Burns Red (Have they really never played? maybe I missed their name), AFI (perfect here I think), Spanish Love Songs, Yellowcard, One Step Closer, Judiciary Dreams/Reunions/Might be too big: Paramore, Deftones, MCR, MewithoutYou, Circa Survive, Title Fight That probably leans too far into the emo side and not enough early 2000s metalcore, but it's my wishlist so I'll do what I want.
Repeats: Underoath, Converge, Defeater, Cartel, Mae, Mayday Parade, Touche Amore, Turnstile, Andrew WK, Knocked Loose, Alexisonfire, The Acacia Strain, Angel Du$t, Deafheaven, Drug Church, Fiddlehead, The Ghost Inside, Bleeding Through, The Story So Far, Descendents, Kublai Khan, Soul Glo, Vein.fm, Drain, Enter Shikari, High Vis, Militarie Gun, Scowl, Terror, Bane, Better Lovers, The Callous Daoboys, Defeater, The Hotelier, Bayside, Jesus Piece, Mindforce, Trash Talk New Bands: Code Orange, The Wonder Years, IDLES, PUP, Citizen, Hot Mulligan, Motion City Soundtrack, The Menzingers, Turnover, Silverstein, Sum 41, Fireworks, Heart Attack Man, Less Than Jake, Against Me or Laura Jane Grace, Hellogoodbye, Jeff Rosenstock, Joyce Manor, Spanish Love Songs, Jawbreaker, Jimmy Eat World, La Dispute, Origami Angel, The Early November, The Starting Line, Tigers Jaw, American Football, Balance & Composure, Basement, Gag, Incendiary, AFI, Smoking Popes, Stray from the Path, The Interrupters, You Me & Everyone We Know Reunions: The Chariot, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Something Corporate, Hostage Calm, Transit, The Swellers
I've never been able to make it to FF but 2024 is going to be hard to pass up. If only they could have made it to 2025, can you image all the 20 yr album shows? They could do a festival of just those bands/albums alone
from the couple of low quality videos I've seen of American Love and Blue 42, Jimmy sounds great still
Was it known Jimmy would be there? I'm a mild fan of both eras and thought it was just the newer guy. Might would've made more of an effort to stay if I had known Jimmy would be there too.
I don't think anything was said directly but since Trenches (Jimmy's current band) was playing earlier the same day I was not surprised to hear that he made appearances.
Favorite Sets of the Weekend: 1. Turnstile 2. Drain 3. Bane 4. Trash Talk 5. Braid 6. Mindforce 7. Vein 8. Terror 9. High Vis 10. Mae HM: Gorilla Biscuits, Better Lovers, Militarie Gun
