This was pretty good but I fear a lot of people are going to expect fury road 2.

also wild that ATJ doesn’t show up until like an hour in

Yeah this is absolutely not another Fury Road but I loved it. Hemsworth is kooky and ATJ kills it as a younger Furiosa. As far as prequels go, I've never felt so compelled to throw on the next movie in a series than I did at the end of this. A double feature of this and FR is a no brainer

I think that's why my sister was disappointed. I adjusted my expectations when I realized that's not what was being set up.

Once I rewatch it, I think i'm going to bump this to a full five stars. Having full knowledge of the structure is key.

This is not just of a piece with Fury Road but also in conversation with Three Thousand Years of Longing and Babe: Pig in the City

I found this as viscerally thrilling as Fury Road. Furiosa is an all-time cinematic character. I can think about her and Max and George Miller endlessly. It’s astounding what Miller is capable of at this stage of his career.

Been thinking about it since last night and my only issue with it is the pacing at times. Other than that it’s great.

    Maybe so, maybe not.

So I'd start by saying to go see this in theaters...obviously. But if you're in this thread right now you're gonna be doing that.

As mentioned above: fair or unfair, this movie will suffer unnecessarily from two things: 1) it's a prequel to a generational film and the expectations are so wildly, and perhaps unreasonably, high, 2) it is significantly more plot, exposition, and world-building vs. 99% pure adrenaline and action. The second part will color people's experiences a lot and probably not in a good way. I would concede that this structural shift makes for some minor pacing issues along the way, particularly in the ramp-up in the first hour or so.

That being said, all the elements in here that build up The Wasteland are fascinating and richly add to the tapestry of the world. This feels like the rare essential prequel where every detail genuinely improves and expands on how great Fury Road is. Despite the barren ugliness of the post-apocalyptic world, there is plenty of eye candy, and all of the crazy outfits, characters, and flourishes remain cranked to 11 here. On any given frame there's a lot to take in and admire. Similar to this year's Dune: Part Two, the sense of scale is meticulously built up and earned, and thus felt wholly by the viewer.

The actors all kill it: Anya Taylor-Joy takes a while to appear and has precious little dialogue, but I'm all in on her as an action star. She does a ton here with her uniquely emotive face, body language, and physicality. I've never been huge on Hemsworth but you can tell he had a ton of fun with this in a rather menacing turn with a script that gives him some absolute bangers to work with.

If I'm being entirely honest, the thing that's killing me about this is that a movie that's almost ten years older than it somehow looks a great deal better. I'm sure concessions had to be made to get a film of this magnitude made, especially with Fury Road's infamous production, but that movie does a significantly better job at seamlessly blending practical and CGI than this does.

Flat out: some parts of this don't look very good, and it's a bit scary to think how some of it will age if I feel that way right now. When you combine this with some odd cinematography choices for certain moments— those long zooms for Dementus barreling into the gate?—it's a little bit distracting.

But enough negativity. The action setpieces, though fewer than Fury Road, absolutely bring it and are differentiated in all the right bonkers ways and the violence within feels more visceral, sadistic, and disturbing. It's a hooting, hollering, oooh, aaah carnival of chaos all around with the stakes stressfully massive at any given moment. When you think about watching this on our dying planet where we're perpetually at war with one another, the immoral insanity of all it feels suffocating.

And oh yeah; that ending is so, so great, a dizzying high note to close this one out on. I know Geroge Miller is 79 but it would be a welcome miracle if we all got to visit The Wasteland one more time. It's a great thing that Hollywood is still making things like this.

Also, a plot point I don't really get...

Furiosa escapes from the bald Rictus Erectus and they just...don't every look for her or question where she went...?

that’s where pacing becomes an issue, they cram a ton of stuff into like 25-30 minutes in the middle. this honestly could have been 3 hours and maybe should have been.

I would have gladly watched a 3.5 hour cut of this. I was transfixed on whatever Miller was bringing to the table at all times. A master at work

Off to see this in an hour. I'll admit that I never got super hyped for this despite loving FR, but everyone's thoughts in here have made me decide to go see it after all.

Taking a whole hour before ATJ even shows up is such a bold choice. Her introduction got an applause break in my crowd. It earned it

  18. I prefer the more frantic pace of fury road and it looks better. Some things in furiosa didn’t look great. Hemsworth was so good. I didn’t know he had that in him. The world building was great. It’s crazy how much ATJ reminded me of Charlize. Great casting. And the little girl could have been ATJs sister. They looked so alike.

Yes the practical effects seamlessly blended with CG in Fury Road look better than the CG heavy stuff in Furiosa, but MIller is doing such insane work with the camera that could not be accomplished without CG. It doesn't bother me when the imagery is so bonkers and unlike anything i've ever seen before

Chris Hemsworth was perfect and someone who is like climate change begets chaos and fascism is way more interesting than just pure evil

Also hilarious that no one recognized Anya the most distinctive features in the world

I really enjoyed this despite some dodgy cgi and a few bits of logic that pulled me out of the moment. Otherwise very good and makes me wanna rewatch Fury Road since I haven’t since it was in theaters lol
