Games really need to move away from the concept of "easy mode" or "hard mode" as a whole, as they imply difficulty is a static thing across all players when in reality what one person finds challenging another person will still find easy. Feel like if (or maybe just hope) people realized that an "easy mode" for some people would still be more of a challenge for the person playing on that mode than the standard game mode is for them there would be less pushback to the idea. Like shouldn't the most hardcode gamers actually want difficulty sliders as it means they can also make the game more challenging and show off how really elite their gamer skillz are?
I don’t think difficulty and accessibility are the same thing especially as it relates to people with disabilities which seems to be your point but I also don’t think every game should have sliders to change the game difficulty. I think there are already things in this game that achieve accessibility, and people can argue to the moon and back if they could’ve gone further, but I’m more concerned with controls and other auxiliary settings as it relates to accessibility, like can disabled people comfortably play the game with their custom controller set up or graphic set up if it’s a vision thing, etc. that’s where the conversation about accessibility really should be and less about whether or not there should be an easy mode, because yeah I don’t think every studio is obligated to make their games beatable no matter what, the entire philosophy behind from games is that you overcome hardship for reward, that would be COMPLETELY lost with an easy mode, I don’t see any way around it. And I get it, I never got into dark souls because I didn’t want to buy a game just to never finish it, and I wasn’t going to buy elden ring for the same reason but took a chance and guess what, I fucking love it and want to play all the dark souls games now. Because yeah the game is hard but it’s not impossible. As long as it’s possible for disabled people to beat the game I don’t see the need for an easy mode. But that could depend on a case by case basis and people in that community could probably shed more light on it. More often than not these conversations are dominated by able bodied people who think they’re entitled to see a game’s ending because they paid the price of admission. And I’m not sure that’s something I agree with.
again, overcoming a challenge was the entire plot to celeste -- the difficulty of the game mirrored the story it was telling. But they still included options to make the game easier so that more people could enjoy it while also including optional bonus challenges for people who wanted harder stuff to do and also, if the philosophy of the game is that it should be hard, it should have adaptive settings so that both seasoned pros and newbies can all get a rewarding, challenging experience out of it. a single static difficulty means you're gonna have a bunch of people on one end of the spectrum who don't even get to play the game because its too hard for them, and people on the other end of the spectrum who still don't find the game that challenging and so don't really have to overcome any hardships while playing it.
lol so due to the convo here i did end up going back to activate godrick's rune and it turns out i missed a massive chunk of the stormveil dungeon haha. it is fun coming back at level 69 and fucking all this shit up
I just fought Godrick for the first time. I got him into phase two but that fire torch move just devastated me.
im far past it now but a little tip that helped me: you shouldn't be taking any damage in the first phase (assuming you're using summons and spirit ashes). opt for patience over aggression while your summons are alive taking aggro. because if you get too aggressive he drops their aggro real quick and fucks you up
I do wish shops would show whether or not a piece of equipment’s stats are better or worse than what you’re wearing before you buy it It’s not a dealbreaker or anything obviously but I definitely got spoiled by that in other Fromsoft games so felt weird that it all of a sudden doesn’t happen in ER. It’s the one way I wanna be lazy
Found Elden Ring to be just as difficult as you want it to be. Anything that's too hard you can go level up and come back to it. I think I actually did that to a fault almost. Also new to Fromsoft games. Kind of like Returnal in that once you just accept dying you start playing around that and it gets easier. A difficulty setting isn't necessary at all here because of that.
