I remember playing horizon zero Dawn for a few hours and really not enjoying the extreme information overload coming up on the UI at almost all times. Dunno if it was toned down at all for forbidden west
I meant more applied in general. We're talking about things being added to games that aren't required to be used but make the game more accessible to people. But, and I don't know if this was intended to be directed at me, but you're right that I'm not playing this game and so 99% of what I'm saying is just me doing a thought exercise and running my mouth. All I know is someone in that thread said they would like some kind of log so they can remember important information in case they forget. Clearly they at least need it. I don't really see that being a bad idea on the surface, and it doesn't sound like something that would ruin someone's experience.
But like, the Valhalla/AC HUD is just as minimalist as what elden ring does. That's my point. Think the only thing significally different about their HUDs is they show quest information. Which I believe you can also turn off if you don't want. The super cluttered huds are a thing of the past.
No haha I just wanted to Clown on the battlefield guy. as I said, I think a dialogue log of sorts would be cool but a straight up quest log would belie the core design principles.
Every Assassin’s Creed in the last decade Both Horizons Dying Light 1&2 Witcher 3 Skyrim a dozen times BOTW Red Dead 2 Fallout 4 ghost Do you need a comprehensive list of every game I’ve played in the last 10 years because a meme upset you?
Big quest logs make so many games feel like a chore. Ghost of Tsushima for instance, a great game, but a huge quest log telling you where to go and the reward you receive for completing it. By late game I find myself just fast traveling as close as I can to the destination, killing whoever I need to, and skipping dialogue to get the reward because by that point it feels like an obligation. AC Odyssey another one I gave up on after a while because it overwhelms you with so much shit. These games would lose a lot by incorporating more systems telling you what to do instead of rewarding you for exploring and being curious
Being fed a constant stream of info in a log that tells me exactly what to do and where to go would absolutely hinder the kind of free form exploration I’ve been having in this game and likely trivialize the more emergent open world scenarios that happen from just stumbling upon random shit. That kind of thing wouldn’t outright disappear with a quest log sure but it would become a much less vital part of the game. Plus with the amount of guides and YouTube videos already out there for this game it’s extremely, extremely easy to figure out what to do if you get stuck or can’t remember where an NPC wants you to go. I’ve used YouTube more than a few times to figure things out, but that has led to me being able to figure things out more on my own and needing guides less and less which leads to a much more rewarding gameplay experience. In my opinion.
It’s not as bad as AC games used to be but it’s still pretty cluttered especially when you open up the map and see all the little markers scattered all over. All you see in elden ring are graces and that’s it
BOTW: https://images.nintendolife.com/6505f3c913c9c/the-legend-of-zelda-breath-of-the-wild.large.jpg Assassin's creed: https://blogs-images.forbes.com/erikkain/files/2018/06/aco-9f.jpg Witcher 3: https://www.guru3d.com/index.php?ct=news&action=file&id=10264 go play some other video games. there are a lot of good games on that list
I mean you see all the ruins/caves/trees/evergoals too. Its less crowded. But also we were talking HUDs not map screens.
I mean yes those are some elegant UIs but the problem is *what* they’re showing. They almost match up 1:1 with the dumb meme. not BOTW of course. But Witcher and AC for sure. Should’ve turned on your Witcher senses clucky haha
I’m just talking the user interface in general which I lump the map in with but you’re right it’s not as bad as it used to be but again I think the point of that pic is to be an over the top caricature, and as someone who plays open world games like crazy I didn’t find it to be inaccurate, just overly exaggerated
This has a lot of Calvin's dad "It builds character" energy behind it. I feel like your points would be better received if you were less extra about them, but what do I know. This is true, and I do understand that point of view. I also understand that even as I say that something unobtrusive can be ignored, it then becomes a temptation to be avoided. Personally, I guess I subscribe to both worlds. I am all about exploration and discovery, but I also am a very task-based person, both in gaming and in life. I like knowing where I have to go and what I have to do, and completing missions makes me feel rewarded.
I like the ui in elden ring just because it’s so minimal and if I ever need to know some stats I just hit the triangle button to bring up the menu to see how much runes I got
the Witcher is also like 7 years old. Stuff has clearly improved since then. But even being 7 years old it’s not nearly as bad as the screenshot meanwhile assassins creed’s only major difference is quest information. Which I’m like 95% sure you can turn off if you dislike it
I wish I could, but it's $60 and I'm currently between jobs so I have to hold onto as much money as I can for the time being. Maybe once I start working again, I can think about dropping that money.
But you can do the latter in elden ring, I have a personal running list of side bosses I’m stuck at and want to take down later when I’m ready and side areas I want to explore, and tbh it feels much better coming up with my own goals and things I want to do and then doing them than it would if the game was telling me exactly what it wants me to do
The PC version has been nothing but fantastic for me for the last seven days I’ve played. Maybe 2-3 crashes total but I’m playing 6-10 hours a day
I don’t know how many times I have to say the meme is purposefully exaggerated but I guess I’ll say it again and hope it lands
