In other From games it was very useful to parry but in ER it’s more about dodge counter. Quick little video for you.

What Nate said is correct, but I'm going to add a little more.

I have never parried once so far in the game, as it requires timing I don't have. Guard countering though, I do all day every day, as it's super effective.

The thing you want to bear in mind when using a shield is that first, it's only effective when it's in front of you. This sounds obvious, but I can't tell you how many times I got hit because I was attacking a little too early, which lowered my shield.

Second, the shield is tied to your stamina and will only block so much before you stagger. So be watching that green bar on your screen and know the limits of your defense.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks folks. At the moment it's often a challenge to process everything there is to think about in the heat of battle. I'll get there!

The hardest thing about the Dark Souls to Elden Ring transition for me was switching to guard countering and not bothering trying to parry, was so used to it but guard countering works so tremendously well

Alecto is definitely a top 3-5 hardest "field boss" in the game IMO...but what you get from beating her is tremendously useful

(the Ball-bearing hunter at the abandoned Shack in Caelid is probably #1 IMO)

Player's Log: I completed Sellen's questline, and again, I'm uncomfortable with how it ended. Does anyone get a happy ending in the Lands Between?

Anyway, I also completed the majority of activities on Mt. Gelmir. The only thing I haven't done is the Volcano Manor, which I won't do until I've progressed far enough in that questline.

The walkthrough I'm using says at this point I should be sufficiently levelled to take on Dragonbarrow. I think they're wrong.

What I might do instead is continue on to the Capital Outskirts and complete as much of that as possible. And once that's done, maaaaaaybe Leyndell? Who knows?

I'd just do Dragonbarrow first to get it out of the way, there is not a lot there and it is not that bad at all save for one tough boss you can just leave for later anyway. Leyndell is incredible so "save the best for last"!

I mean, I'm not interested in "getting things out of the way" if they're going to drive me up the wall.

I will dip my toes in a bit and see how I feel. If I feel it's getting too annoying, I'll save it for later.

I'm not planning to go straight to the capital anyway, I still have a whole section of things to do inbetween Altus and the actual capital.

Just did some research on the site I'm using, and if we use the amount of runes you get as a metric for when a boss should be fought, the game seems to want Dragonbarrow to be done after Leyndell, and maybe even after the Forbidden Lands, but before the Consecrated Snowfield.

IDK what to say without risking spoilers, but there is something in Dragonbarrow that is quite beneficial to the player, and is probably more beneficial at a lower player level as opposed to the higher levels you would be around the point you are at the Forbidden Lands

You really don't need to be vague with me, I'm not concerned about spoilers and I already know a lot of what's ahead.

Anyway, I'm not sure what you're referring to though, unless you mean awakening Radahn's rune.

Basically, depending on where you enter Drangonbarrow from, you can get a free 180,000+ runes by killing Elder Dragon Greyoll completely unchallenged, no bossfight or anything. So the lower the level you kill Greyoll at, the more times you can level up from the runes you get.

Oh, I did that. I did that when I got the Dectus Medallion half. I even bragged about how I'm a fuckin coward.

Ahh sorry, I guess you can do Dragonbarrow whenever if that's the case. Also it's not cowardly it's funny and good to get runes in such a manner - I have just watched a video that shows you how to get 135,000 runes in 25 seconds using just 3 attacks, and I am planning to do that several times to buy lots of smithing stones and upgrade a load of weapons :-)

Yesterday I noticed I somehow got a hold of like 5 Numen's Runes. Went up 4-5 levels in one jump.

I usually don't pay attention to what I pick up until I go into my inventory to spend them at a Site Of Grace. It's like Christmas every time.

Note: you have to have defeated the final boss & traded in their remembrance for a certain weapon, and then upgraded it to +10, and also have access to Mohgwyn Palace underground area, so the video will contain slight spoilers if you are not at that point in the game. The guy is in NG+ it seems, so you may not get as much as 135,000 before then.

I know you said you were doing Deeproot Depths recently, and I believe the first time you kill each of the big mega mama ant with the sac you get a huge rune

Took out Mohg then went back up to scale the dragon wing. Then took out Godfrey! This whole area is cool.

also found the abandoned round table hold and took out those two npc’s for the next volcano manor assassination tasks. Got some awesome gear in that area.
